Department Marketing Statement

Brief Summary of Job Duties

Works at the customer service window of the University Center Post Office performing US Postal Service transactions and release parcels to addressees (students). Receives, records and sorts incoming US Mail and parcels. Picks up incoming mail from the USPS processing center and also delivers packages to the Santa Catalina Residence complex daily. Operates the University Center truck. Lifts and handles parcels weighing up to 70 pounds. Responsible for performing daily scheduled tasks within the UCen Post Office including: monitoring student staff, confirming addressing of US Mail and packages with inaccurate addressing and discerning the appropriate disposition of these items. Basic light cleaning and maintenance duties, and other duties as assigned within the scope of the job description.

Required Qualifications

  • Ability to read, write, perform mathematical calculations, understand and follow generalized and specific work instructions, both oral and written.
  • Perform tasks for prolonged periods while standing, walking, driving, operating hand trucks, electric carts, forklifts and other motorized moving equipment.
  • Lift and transport heavy mail sacks.
  • Comfortable working in student staff environment: eagerness to learn applications unique to a University Post Office.
  • Knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High School Diploma
  • Two years of experience in the handling of campus and U.S. mail, including a working knowledge of postal regulations and postal rates.

Special Conditions of Employment

  • Occasional special work hours on weekdays and weekends may be needed as directed by manager.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.

  • Maintain a valid CA driver's license and a clean DMV record.
  • Satisfactory conviction history background check.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

  • 45% - Mail Processing, Sorting Mail & Packages: Receives, records and sorts incoming USPS Mail and parcels including registered, certified, insured mail and accountable USPS parcels. Answer all questions about classes of mail, postage rates, customs requirements, and weight & size limitations. Work closely with the Mail Processor Sr. to solve customer service issues/problems and handle daily operational issues. Processes incorrectly addressed US Mail and parcels received at the UCen Post Office. Researches student database to discern addressees and student status/location on or off campus and coordinates student work activities.
  • 25% - Window/Customer Service: Works at the customer service window assisting customers with package pick up, making money orders, renting PO boxes, collecting money for PO keys and making keys, setting up and closing the cash drawer, and any other transactions that may occur. Answers customer questions over phone or at service window pertaining to USPS Rules & Regulations, UCSB UCen Post Office policies, service inquiries, responds to requests regarding parcel arrival or delivery confirmation, resolve all other questions or issues as they pertain to the UCen Post Office from UCSB staff members, faculty, students, parents and other customers.
  • 20% - Mail Pick Up: Operates the University Center truck. Lifts and handles parcels weighing up to 70 lbs. Picks up incoming mail from the USPS processing center. Makes delivery to UCen Post Office and Santa Catalina package room at scheduled intervals. Returns extra USPS mail and package containers to USPS facility.
  • 10% - General Duties & Maintenance: Responsible for performing Start of Day & End of Day duties entailing basic cleaning and organization of Post Office work areas; perform basic upkeep and maintenance of equipment and forms unique to UCen Post office including, key cutting machine, postal containers, internal signage & parcel labels. Also, perform basic document and spreadsheet reports as direct by Manager. Help maintain a healthy and safe work environment.
