Job Details

St. Mary s Food Bank is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Temporary Controller to join our team for a 5-month period. The Controller is responsible for leading the day-to-day financial operations including the preparation of monthly financial statements and delivery of analytical support to management. Reporting to the VP of Finance/Chief Financial Officer, this high-profile position is responsible for the oversight of internal controls as well as fiscal policy compliance to ensure the integrity of the general ledger while demonstrating superior customer service through collaboration and partnership with key business leaders.


Essential Functions

Support staff during the monthly financial close process by reviewing journal entries and reconciliations as well as providing guidance as needed.

Partner with department leaders to analyze financial trends and support business needs.

Maintain schedule of net assets with donor restrictions

Administer, manage, and maintain compliance with all government grants, including annual preparation of SEFA.

Prepare key financial reports for management and auditors.

Forecast, monitor, and report cash flow.

Ensure all team deliverables are completed and deadlines met.

Keep management informed of status of team s workload and priorities.

Review and ensure compliance with monthly grant reporting and reimbursement reporting.

Oversee bi-weekly payroll processing and ensure compliance with all laws and regulations.

Ensure internal and external controls are in place.

Serves as lead for the annual budget process, producing materials and schedules, compiling and analyzing data, and producing a high-quality draft to management.

Oversee the annual financial audit, single audit, workers comp audit, 401k audit, and other grant compliance audits.

Prepare annual SOFE.

Performs all other duties as assigned.


Performs all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, as well as applicable professional standards. Provides all internal and external customers of St. Mary s Food Bank with an excellent service experience.


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor s degree in accounting

Strong accounting skills with 5-7 years experience

Comprehensive understanding of GAAP

Strong interpersonal skills

Excellent written and verbal communication skills required,

Ability to lead the team in a dynamic environment, managing ever changing and conflicting priorities.

Ability to work well with individuals at various levels (including non-financial individuals)

Ability to effectively manage performance of staff by evaluating and maximizing strengths and addressing developmental opportunities,

Ability to analyze financial statements/schedules and write commentary to explain variances in a concise, clear manner,

Ability to evaluate current accounting processes and propose/implement improvements,

Expert Excel skills

Preferred Qualifications


Previous food distribution and/or non-profit work experience

  • Experience with Ceres (Microsoft Navision) system
  • Prior experience with Paylocity or similar payroll provider
