SUMMARY

Provides maximum protection for the safety and security of university personnel, students, visitors and Gwynedd Mercy University assets. Represents the university by giving directions or information when requested. Recognizes that "service" is key to the mission of the Public Safety/Security Department. This position requires a valid driver's license.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Provides for a safe and secure environment. Performs security duties either at a fixed post, or while making rounds of university buildings and grounds. Checks for unauthorized persons, general security violations, or safety hazards. Reports all problems and emergencies to immediate supervisor and documents incidents with a written report.

Verifies the appropriateness of persons on university campus. Checks ID badges and ensures that employees and students are permitted in appropriate buildings. Ensures that visitors comply with visiting regulations and schedules.

Provides security escorts to employees, students and visitors. Completes a security escort assignment throughout the university including all buildings and parking lots. Provides escorts with service and friendly demeanor in order to reinforce comfort level.

Assists with campus parking issues. Assists employees, students and visitors with any parking related issue. Notifies supervisor to call for tow truck and/or police services as may be necessary. Maintains parking lots and parking lot equipment, and reports all problems to maintenance.

Unlocks and locks facility. Unlocks secured areas when requested by authorized persons. Ensures that areas be secured when appropriate.

Responds to calls for service. Responds immediately to all emergency calls and notifies supervisor of condition. Responds promptly to all routine security calls and notifies command center of outcome. Diffuses any difficult situation with conflict resolution skills.

Maintains daily patrol log. Documents all safety/security actions taken during a tour of duty. Makes entry on patrol log at least once every 15 minutes. Submits completed log to shift supervisor at completion of tour. Documents specific incident reports including the taking of photographs.

Supports loss prevention. As directed by shift supervisor, inspects packages brought into and taken out of any university building. Performs safety rounds and identifies deficiencies for corrective action.

Responds promptly and positively to students, employees and visitors in a respectful, courteous, and confidential manner. Maintains an identifiable/professional attire at all times. Answers telephones calls within three rings 95% of the time. Respects confidentiality of students and co-workers in all circumstances 100% of the time. Greets students, families, co-workers and others in a calm, professional, friendly manner by making eye contact, initiating conversation and identifying self by name.

Follows GMercyU and department policies and procedures. Attends mandatory sessions/meetings/in-services 100% of the time. Adheres to GMercyU and department attendance policies and procedures. Demonstrates knowledge and application of university and department procedures and policies.

Provides or facilitates in providing a clear, safe, quiet and secure environment for all. Reports any incident that seems unusual/deficient to immediate supervisor as necessary.

Education and/or Experience

High School diploma or GED required.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively with individuals and before small groups.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent.

Interpersonal Skills

Ability to deal effectively and professionally with others, consonant with the mission and values of the department and Gwynedd Mercy University.

Reasoning Skills

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to respond effectively to emergency situations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Must be able to respond to emergency situations by running from one building to another.
