Crew Chief


Job Details

PURPOSE OF POSITION
Under the general supervision of the Assistant/Project Manager, the Crew Chief manages the field procedures
and data collection to complete the required projects. If applicable, the Crew Chief directs and leads the
Instrument Operator to perform survey tasks in the most efficient way possible.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Possesses knowledge to efficiently utilize all field equipment within company inventory
(Trimble/Leica/Spectre robotic total stations, data collectors, auto-levels, GPS RTK Units, wireless
communications, 3D Laser Scanners, etc.)
Ability to upload and download field data files (raw, fbk, asc), photos, field notes, etc. and review with
the office staff
Responsible for proper file documentation and organization at project completion.
Ability to interpret maps, including scale off drawings, determine distances, read map symbols, notes,
etc.
Knowledge of the different types of surveys with the basic differences between them including the
purpose and reason for the survey.
Ability to ensure seamless communications with Assistant/Project Manager and other team members
on project issues.
Ability to maintain equipment (keeps tripods, tribrachs, prism poles and other equipment clean and
calibrated; advises ahead of time when instruments need to be scheduled for calibration or
maintenance).
Comprehends the names, purposes and parts that are needed for calibration of various surveying field
instruments.
Ability to take initiative to identify efficient ways of performing tasks and follow through.
Ability to function without the data collector and other state-of-the-art equipment in times of battery
or equipment failure.
Good working knowledge of general computer functions/applications (Windows Explorer, Word, Excel,
etc.) and their applications to surveying.
Willingness/ability to assume increased responsibilities.
Willingness/ability to expand knowledge of land surveying through training (in-house seminars or other
educational classes)
Ability to work overtime as needed and travel with overnight stays if required.
Provides insights and ideas at company meetings.
Must be dependable and punctual.
Takes necessary steps to ensure equipment is setup in a safe environment with proper safety
equipment.
Utility documentation including consistently providing checklists for utility information along with
sketches in accordance with company policy. Includes sketches, notes on discussions with property
owner, field cross check on measurements, etc.
Ensures quality of all manual field notes, raw data, coordinates files and sketches performed by the
crew.
Performs and works on all construction related survey tasks, including but not limited to the stakeout
of building foundations, column lines, curb, sidewalks, walls, grading, LOD and site infrastructure.
Provides and maintains a professional site presence and ability to assist conversing with site
superintendent, client and office staff.
Assists in offering solutions or alternatives to achieving job objectives.
Performs field calculations to modify stakeout when necessary.
Maintains company vehicle maintenance and inventory to ensure vehicle is well stocked with stakes,
lath, rebar, caps, etc.
Self-organize and motivate when working alone and Supervise and motivate instrument operators
when assigned
Completion and utilization of in-house checklists to ensure quality control and effective time
management.
Positively represent the brand while communicating professionally and regularly with customers on
site
Any other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES / EDUCATION
A minimum of 5 years of demonstrated successful, reliable surveying experience
High School Diploma and strong math and computer skills
The ability and desire to expand your skillsets and adapt to new technologies
Highly proficient field coding to be used for field to finish auto linework
Ability to complete additional certifications, i.e. (OSHA Certifications (10, 30, 40, etc.), Hazwoper, TWIC,
etc.)
Must possess a valid driver's license.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Physical ability to lift up to (75lbs) and able to stand/walk for 8+ hours a day. Ability to extensively perform
bending, kneeling, standing, climbing, hiking, digging/shoveling, and lifting is required.
Exposure to all weather conditions hot, cold, wet, humid, or other conditions caused by weather.

The Crew Chief will work in the field with the survey crew. Field work is often performed on busy streets or construction sites.
When employee is working on busy street, there is exposure to risk of injury due to vehicular traffic. Loud noise may be experienced at times.
May incur mental stress due to time deadlines, pressures and demands from both internal and external sources.
