ArtCenter College of Design is searching for an experienced Tool Crib, part-time to join our team.

The salary range for this position: $21.00 - 24.00 per hour

Finalsalary is based on education, experience, skills relevant to therole, and internal equity.

The Tool Crib Worker's responsibilities involve issuing tools and materials, and fielding questions from students on materials and procedures while guiding them on the safe use of shop tools. These tasks are often carried out simultaneously, so the ability to multitask is necessary. This also requires the capacity to maintain an even-tempered disposition and remain calm under pressure while helping students toward the completion of their projects. Will provide coaching and mentoring to other tool crib workers.

This is a part-time on-site position. Normal shop hours are Monday - Friday 8 a.m. - 10 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Must be able to work any shift.

Essential Functions

Tool Checkout - 55%

  • Assist supervisors with coaching, training and mentoring to other workers
  • Issuing in and out of tools and materials using web checkout
  • Retail sales including the use of a cash register and computer
Inventory - 20%
  • Keeping track of inventory and reordering when needed
  • Restocking inventory items and ordering supplies as needed
Shop Safety - 20%
  • Maintain a safe work environment throughout the department
  • Comply and ensure that safety and dress codes are carried out in accordance with shop policies, including wearing assigned PPE
  • Attend required training sessions on assigned PPE provided by the College
Non-Essential - 5%
  • Other related duties, as may be assigned

Physical Demands and Working Environment

Environment: Work is performed primarily in a shop setting with frequent interruptions and distractions; extended periods of time using shop equipment including computers, viewing computer monitors, shop equipment etc.; interactions with other individuals. Due to the nature of the work environment, there is exposure to loud noises, chemicals, fumes, dust and heat.

Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an shop setting; to stand or walk for prolonged periods of time; including, bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching, squatting, and twisting; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull moderate to heavyamounts of weight (50 pounds, or team-lift up to 100 pounds); to operate office and shop equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; and to verbally communicate to exchange information. Regular and consistent attendance are required for most positions.

Vision: Must be able to have the visual capacity to perform activities such as setting up equipment, viewing a computer terminal and other normal technician work with or without correction.

Hearing: Must be able to communicate effectively in the course of normal business communication or exchange ideas with or without correction

Required Qualifications:
  • 2- 3 years of customer service and cashiering experience
  • Some experience using basic wood and metal working tools
  • Basic computer skills are necessary
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills necessary for customer service, including the patience and understanding required to work with students on a daily basis
  • Basic knowledge of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) compliance requirements including hazardous chemicals and hazardous waste management
  • Must be a team player
  • A self-starter with good multi-tasking skills; highly organized, able to work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work well in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural environment with students, faculty and staff with varying degrees of skills and backgrounds
  • Available to work weeknights and some weekends
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience using large power tools is a plus
  • Bachelor's degree or technical degree from a recognized trade school, or equivalent experience
  • Prior experience in higher education
