Job Duties

Interested in building your career in highway maintenance and construction and serving the travelling public?

VDOT is seeking highly motivated individuals with solid experience operating equipment (dump truck, loader, backhoe, motor grader, tractor w/attachments, etc.) and performing manual labor to join our highway maintenance team.

Maintenance Operators set up work zones, perform traffic control, cut brush, clean ditches and pipes, repair roadways, plow snow, and perform preventive maintenance and basic repairs on highway equipment and hand/power tools.

Perform emergency roadway operations as an essential employee during snow/severe weather and other emergency events. Must be willing to work outside of normal work hours during emergency conditions.

Minimum Qualifications

Ability to operate and maintain equipment comparable that used in highway maintenance/construction activities.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor to include frequently lifting up to 50 lbs.
Skill in the operation and preventive maintenance of handheld and power tools.
Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 6 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
Ability to work inclement weather, accidents, and emergency/disaster response, etc. during/after normal work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Additional Considerations

Valid CDL or CDL Permit.
Experience with heavy manual labor and heavy equipment operation.
Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs.
Experience in emergency operations to include snow removal, storms and accident response and clean-up.
A combination of training, experience, and/or education which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
