$33.34/hourly (non-CDL)
$34.37/hourly (CDL)
(40 hours weekly)
This position has an 8-step hourly salary range ($33.34 to $37.54 non-CDL and $34.37 to $38.68 CDL)

This position has responsibility for the maintenance and overall condition of town and school vehicles, including CDL vehicles and heavy equipment, mini-buses, ambulance, police vehicles, fire trucks, etc. in a reliable and safe condition according to approved standards. Performs routine, specialized and preventive maintenance for all vehicle/equipment in the most cost-effective manner.
Essential Job Functions:

  • Reads equipment specifications, repair manuals and implements adopted maintenance schedules and procedures.
  • Does preventative and routine maintenance on lawn mowers, cars, light and heavy trucks, loaders, backhoes, tractors, street sweeper, police vehicles, ambulance, mini-buses, fire trucks, etc.
  • Prepares equipment maintenance records by completing work orders and recording job cost and time.
  • Performs equipment maintenance and repair work involving tasks ranging in complexity from checking sufficiency of fluid levels and pressures to complete engine/transmission disassembly, repair and rebuild
  • Trouble shoots and repairs electrical, hydraulic, mechanical and other equipment systems.
  • Test operates vehicles or equipment, discusses performance with operator; uses lift or jack to analyze, test, inspect, and determine cause of malfunction. Performs standard diagnostic tests using specially designed test equipment for hydraulic components, electrical systems, brake systems, clutches, and similar mechanical work as available.
  • Uses mechanic's hand tools and power equipment to remove, disassemble, and repair, rebuild, or replace defective parts or units. Grinds, files, and sands repaired surfaces using power and hand tools
  • Forms, cuts, weld, braze and otherwise works and adheres metals and other equipment materials.
  • Uses hand tools and power tools to repair damaged vehicle bodies and body parts, and auxiliary parts of equipment; Repaints repaired surfaces using spray gun
  • Adapts or modifies vehicles and equipment for safety purposes or emergency use
  • Follows standard safety procedures and regulations
  • Is subject to call out to respond to emergencies after normal working hours.
    Other Functions:
  • Performs similar or related work as required, directed or as situation dictates.
  • Assists other department staff as needed to promote a team effort to serve the public.
  • Performs snow removal duties as needed
  • Assists police with accident reconstruction and research defects in vehicle as cause of accident

    Minimum Qualifications
    Must have a High School Diploma or GED with 3 or more years of vehicle and/or heavy equipment mechanic experience; Vocational School or certification may substitute for one year of experience; Vocational Experience preferred. Must have and maintain: Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B with airbrakes endorsement preferred or be able to obtain a CDL Class B with airbrakes endorsement within 8 months of hire (the cost to obtain CDL will be paid by the Town of Bloomfield and must be obtained during non-working hours). Must submit to CDL Drug testing regulations.
    Selection Process

Examinations may include written, oral, physical, or performance tests or any combination of the various types of examinations. Offers of employment are contingent upon satisfactory results of a background check, pre-employment physical and drug test, and verification of information on the employment application. Qualified applicants currently in positions covered by the Teamsters union contract have preference over all other applicants.
