Position Overview:

Ozinga seeks a dedicated Director of Environmental Compliance to ensure all of our entities, including Ozinga Ready Mix, Ozinga Materials, and Ozinga Cement, comply with environmental regulations. This strategic role involves oversight of environmental permits, pollution prevention, and compliance reporting, directly contributing to our operational excellence and sustainable practices.

This position reports directly to the Vice President of Health & Safety. Peers include the Corporate Safety Director and the Corporate Safety Trainer, highlighting the collaborative environment in which the Director of Environmental Compliance will operate. The role also includes overseeing 1-2 direct reports, ensuring effective management of our environmental compliance initiatives across the company.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Develop and submit environmental permit applications for air and stormwater to federal, state, and municipal agencies, ensuring compliance across various states including Illinois, Indiana, Florida, Wisconsin, and Michigan.
  • Proactively identify and mitigate sources impacting air, soil, and stormwater pollution.
  • Create and distribute comprehensive pollution-prevention plans and manage the monitoring and reporting of environmental conditions.
  • Ensure timely completion of all compliance, hazardous material, and other material reports including EPCRA 312 and 313, Tier II, and Quarterly Manganese Reporting.
  • Conduct and analyze environmental samples, focusing on stormwater and soil across all applicable states.
  • Maintain active engagement with government agencies to discuss and interpret environmental regulations and manage relations during inspections and audits.

Additional Duties:

  • Oversee environmental compliance across multiple sites and operations including Ozinga Ready Mix, Ozinga Materials, and Ozinga Cement, and other Ozinga entities.
  • Manage internal tasks such as annual emission calculations and stormwater compliance, including the filing of NPDES permits and stormwater visual and sampling reports.
  • Lead violation management in collaboration with the legal department and outside counsel, addressing issues with governmental agencies like USEPA and state environmental agencies.
  • Conduct environmental audits annually or more frequently, reviewing air, stormwater, petroleum storage, and hazardous wastes to ensure compliance and address deficiencies.
  • Ensure continuous training in environmental best practices, spill response, and fueling procedures across all departments.
  • Lead specific projects like the MRM AgLime Loading Project and air permitting for new expansions in Pennsylvania and Delaware.

Travel Requirements:

  • This position requires frequent travel to various sites within the region. While overnight travel is infrequent, the ability to travel on short notice is essential.

Who We Are Looking For:

  • Bachelor s Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or related field (Master s preferred).
  • At least 10 years of experience in the environmental industry, with specific expertise in air and stormwater permit applications.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer status is advantageous.
  • Experience in the Ready-Mix Concrete Industry is highly desirable.
  • Self-motivated individual with the ability to meet critical deadlines and organize complex projects.
  • Proficiency in handling physical requirements of the job including working outdoors and lifting up to 50 lbs.
