Position Overview:

As an Associate Scientist in the Protein Sciences department, you will play a pivotal role in supporting the synthesis and characterization of proteins. Your foundational knowledge in protein science, coupled with guidance from experienced scientists, will enable you to contribute to collaborative projects. You will execute protein synthesis protocols, analyze protein structures, and interpret results to advance the team's scientific objectives and the company's research goals. Relocation to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania!

Key Responsibilities:

  • Execute protein production and purification protocols, adhering to established guidelines while seeking process improvements.
  • Analyze protein samples using biochemical and biophysical methods, interpreting data to guide project direction and troubleshoot issues.
  • Develop and optimize new methods and techniques under the mentorship of experienced team members.
  • Utilize software and statistical tools to interpret, analyze, and present experimental data with high accuracy and reliability.
  • Maintain meticulous records of experimental protocols, data, and findings in laboratory notebooks and databases.
  • Review scientific publications to stay informed of emerging methodologies, enhancing experimental protocol development in biochemistry.
  • Contribute to project meetings and scientific discussions, providing insights and updates on research progress.
  • Assist in interpreting research findings and identifying next steps for further study or product improvement.
  • Develop and maintain productive relationships with colleagues within the protein department and across functional teams to enhance collaborative problem-solving and project advancement.
  • Ensure adherence to regulatory standards by authoring, updating, and maintaining Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and quality protocols.
  • Contribute to maintaining lab cleanliness and order, promptly notifying the appropriate person of any equipment-related concerns.
  • Follow and embrace laboratory safety policies to ensure compliance with company safety requirements and regulatory guidelines.
  • Execute other duties and responsibilities as assigned, demonstrating flexibility and commitment to the organization s goals.

Qualifications:

  • Preferred Education: Bachelor s degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific discipline with at least 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Minimum Education Requirements: Bachelor s degree in a relevant life science discipline with at least 4 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience: Minimum of 4 years of hands-on lab experience.
  • Familiarity with relevant protein expression, purification, and characterization techniques.
  • Solid communication skills (written and verbal), with the ability to convey information clearly and effectively in various formats (documents, public speaking, virtual presentations).
  • Demonstrated ability to apply learned techniques and contribute to problem-solving and analysis.
  • Comfort with hands-on laboratory techniques related to setting up reaction apparatus, handling reagents, and working under an inert atmosphere.
  • Ability to develop and maintain professional, positive working relationships with all employees in the company.
  • Knowledge of occupational safety and health rules and regulations.
  • High ethical and confidentiality standards.
  • Strong computer skills, proficient in Microsoft Office applications.

Job Specifics:

  • Employment Type: Permanent, full-time.
  • Eligibility: Candidates must be eligible and able to secure approval from the Department of Defense as a condition of employment, in accordance with our DoD contract requirements pertaining to Controlled Unclassified Information.
  • Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, with availability during BHS working hours of 10:00 am ET to 3:00 pm ET. Flexible schedule outside of those hours.
  • Special Considerations: Occasional work beyond 8 hours a day and/or on weekends, depending on project deadlines and responsibilities.
  • Work Arrangement: Onsite at 307 23rd St EXT, Suite 150, Pittsburgh, PA 15215 (Sharpsburg).
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to work in a laboratory setting for extended periods, manual dexterity for handling delicate instruments, ability to stand or sit for long durations, and lift materials and equipment up to 25 pounds. Clear vision for observing experiments and data, safe handling of hazardous chemicals with protective equipment, occasional walking, and using hands and fingers to operate tools or controls.
  • Job Hazards: Potential exposure to animal materials (plasma, serum, blood, organs) and other hazardous substances of chemical or biological origin after training.
