Job Description:

The Folger Shakespeare Library, located on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, is seeking an experienced content creator to join the Marketing and Communications (Marcoms) team. The Social Media Manager will create content and develop and implement social media strategies to best utilize various social media platforms to increase awareness of and engagement with the Folger and its programming, as well as further our mission to promote access to Shakespeare, the arts, and humanities.

Reporting to the Head of External Relations, the person in this role will have primary responsibility for managing social media for the Folger's wide variety of activities, including: collections and exhibitions, performances, public programming, educational and scholarly activities and events, and digital content and resources. Successful candidates will be experienced content creators who are well versed in using social media platforms and cultivating followings for them, have a demonstrated ability to plan and implement social media strategies, understand and embrace story telling with a heavy emphasis on video and graphic elements, able to manage a demanding editorial calendar, have superior brand awareness and the ability to understand and make decisions in the moment, and work well with both internal and external partners. The person in this role will be able to write for diverse audiences, considering and researching how messaging on social platforms will resonate with families, scholars, students, and residents throughout DC, among other target audiences.

The standard schedule for this role is Monday-Friday, 9:30am-5:30pm or as arranged with supervisor. This position will include pre-planned evening and weekend hours for programming and events requiring social media coverage. This position is currently hybrid with the expectation for one-to-two days on-site per week plus events. The selected candidate will need to be within a commutable distance to the DC office (DC, MD, VA) by their start date.

Compensation:

  • This is a monthly-paid salaried position, with an annual pay range of $70,000-$80,000.

Supervisory Duties:

The Social Media Manager will supervise the work of multiple outside content contractors and vendors for various social media projects within the Marketing and Communications Department.

Duties:

  • Content creation: Plans, develops, creates, and shares digital content for social media that educates, informs, engages, and resonates with our audiences, including video, images/graphics, and copy, for projects and programs across the institution. Contracts and manages multiple content creators. Works with colleagues and subject matter experts in other divisions on content and fosters an environment of collaboration, cross promotion, and consistency in institutional voice.


  • Social media strategies: In coordination with the Head of External Relations, develops, implements, and manages social media strategies to build awareness of the Folger, grow our social media audiences, and deepen digital engagement. Maintains the social media plan and calendar, coordinating with the Folger's editorial and communications calendars.


  • Campaigns: Plans and executes social media campaigns, organic and paid, across multiple platforms for programs and institutional initiatives. Collaborates with Marcoms team to create campaigns that align with the Folger's goals, mission, and priorities.


  • Platform management: Manages social media platforms for institution (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube) and identifies emerging platforms; advises social media channels for researcher and teacher communities (Facebook, X); engages with followers and builds online community.


  • Collaborations: Develops and manages social media collaborations with influencers and with institutional and project partners.


  • Analytics and Reporting: Tracks key performance metrics and provides regular reports on social media performance, campaigns, etc., with analysis and actionable insights. Identifies trends and recommends actions to increase brand awareness and engagement.


  • Consultation: Advises Folger leadership and staff on social media and best practices. Looks for opportunities for cross promotion.


  • General Duties: As a member of the Marcoms team, researches, writes, and edits marketing and communications collateral as needed, including web content and blog posts.


Education and Experience:

  • At least 5 years of professional experience in social media management, digital marketing, digital storytelling, or multimedia journalism with a proven track record of setting and achieving social media goals.


  • Experience with a news organization or in a non-profit theater, museum or other cultural institution is strongly desired.


  • BA degree in English, History, Journalism, Public Relations, Communications, Marketing, or similar discipline, or equivalent professional training is preferred.


Skills and Knowledge:

Required skills include:

  • Strong strategist with ability to create campaigns for projects large and small.


  • Proven track record for producing engaging content, with strong skills in video production, image editing, and writing copy.


  • Experience directing social media initiatives; coordinating the contributions of peers in the department, collaborating with colleagues across organization, and working with outside content experts, partners, and influencers.


  • Demonstrated ability to execute social media plans for growing followers and increasing engagement.


  • Strong interpersonal skills to interact with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds and diverse experiences.


  • Excellent organizational and time management skills to prioritize workloads and to meet time-sensitive deadlines.


  • Attention to detail and ability to work in a highly collaborative environment.


  • Ability to be part of a collaborative and supportive team, to receive and act on constructive feedback from colleagues and provide feedback to others.


Desired Skills include:

  • Experience with Sprout Social or similar social media tracking platform.


  • Video filming and editing experience, using CapCut, Premiere, or similar editing tool.


  • Image editing experience, using Adobe Creative Cloud, Canva.


  • Experience using Wordpress; Airtable; Microsoft Office 365.


  • Knowledge of DC cultural organizations, particularly theaters, museums, libraries, and performance centers.


  • Strong English language proficiency is required; and basic Spanish proficiency is preferred but not required.


Working Conditions:

This job operates in a professional office environment.
