Job Description:
Elsie is looking to hire an oligonucleotide chemist to join its research team in San Diego, California. This is an ideal position for researcher with a background in biochemistry or chemistry and early drug development who thrives in a team-oriented, fast-paced, and cross disciplinary biotechnology environment. This candidate will have a hands-on-role and will contribute to all phases of discovery research to support the development of optimized nucleic acid therapies. Our ideal candidate will bring a wide breadth of experience from solid phase synthesis (SPOS) to experimentation with synthesized biopolymers. In this role, you will work closely with other teams to design and optimize sequence and chemistry of next generation of oligonucleotide therapeutics. Experience in oligonucleotide chemistry and RNAi biology is a plus.
Responsibilities:
- Contribute technically to the development and execution of Elsie s oligonucleotide therapeutics program, designing, planning, troubleshooting, and analyzing a broad range of chemical and biochemical problems. SPOS and oligonucleotide handling, purification, analysis and quantification.
- Routinely operating and maintaining lab equipment: oligonucleotide synthesizers, UPLC/MS, speed-vac, etc.
- Develop, evaluate, and implement new experimental procedures and optimize existing techniques and workflows, develop SOPs Wet lab chemistry (synthesis of modified nucleosides, linker/solid-support synthesis, conjugation chemistries)
- Analyzing, documenting, and regularly presenting scientific data to the chemistry team and companywide where appropriate.
- Keeping up to date with scientific literature to implement learnings in experimental design
- Ensure research continuity by implementing best practices around lab organization, compound management and maintenance/procurement of lab equipment.
- Visualize, summarize, and present experimental results to team members and direct supervisor, contribute to scientific posters/publications and patents
- Manage external collaborations or projects with CROs as needed
Qualifications and experience:
- Ph.D. in Chemistry or Biochemistry or a related discipline, hands-on experience in biotech or pharmaceutical company is a plus.
- Competent in the use of modern laboratory data management systems and software including electronic lab notebooks, ChemDraw, NMR/HPLC data processing, etc.
- Hands-on experience with synthetic organic chemistry and/or oligonucleotide chemistry.
- Laboratory techniques including but not limited to SPOS, conjugation, purification, and handling of oligonucleotides.
- Critical data analysis, attention to detail, and troubleshooting abilities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as strong organizational and problem-solving abilities
- High degree of ownership and accountability and the ability to work with minimal supervision and a high level of initiative
