JOB SUMMARY:
The City of Frederick promotes a service-delivery philosophy among City employees to provide responsive service to residents, to be efficient and results-oriented in order to make the City of Frederick a better place to live, work and visit. Under general supervision, the Refuse Collector collects curbside and containerized refuse and places it into the collection vehicle. An employee in this position is considered "essential personnel" and must be able to respond to emergencies outside normal business hours as necessary.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collects curbside and containerized refuse, placing it into collection vehicle.
  • Operates the collection vehicle's hydraulic packer system to compact collected refuse.
  • Assists driver in safely maneuvering vehicle during collection operations.
  • Adheres to safety rules and accident prevention measures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
  • One (1) to three (3) months of related experience and/or training in performance of heavy manual work is desirable, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

REQUIRED SKILLS (Communication/Language; Mathematical; Computer; etc.):
  • Time management and coordination skills
  • Ability to work in various and changing weather conditions
  • Active listening skills
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Communication skills

Other Desirables
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • One (1) year of experience in the collection of Solid Waste.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
