Position Summary

GENERAL SUMMARY: Under general supervision, the Custodian will keep the Dubuque Municipal Services building and facilities in clean and orderly condition; perform heavy cleaning duties, such as cleaning floors, shampooing rugs, washing walls and glass, and removing rubbish; perform routine maintenance activities; notify management of need for repairs; clean snow or debris from sidewalk; and perform other duties as assigned. Duties may occasionally involve HVAC maintenance; and repairing buildings, floors, or stairs.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work in this class involves responsibility for performing a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the cleaning and minor maintenance of the Municipal Service Center buildings, facilities, parking lots, and grounds. Assignments are received in the form of oral and written instructions from the Public Works administrative team who may inspect work while in progress and upon completion.
Job Duties

  • Remove snow and ice from walks and parking lots;

  • Clean facilities or sites; building walls or flooring; equipment or supplies; furniture or fixtures; equipment, parts, or tools to repair or maintain them in good working order; and work areas.
  • Monitor building premises to ensure occupant or visitor safety.
  • Move vehicles as necessary to clean in the garage and maintenance bays.
  • Dispose of trash or waste materials.
  • Prepare chemicals for work application.

  • Confer with coworkers to coordinate maintenance or cleaning activities.
  • Select equipment, materials, or supplies for cleaning or maintenance activities.
  • Trim trees or other vegetation.
  • Operate grounds maintenance equipment; cranes, hoists, or other moving or lifting equipment; welding equipment; and manual and power tools.
  • Decorate indoor or outdoor spaces.

  • Move furniture.
  • Maintain work equipment, machinery or systems to ensure proper functioning; and mechanical components of vehicles to identify problems.
  • Coordinate the treatment of facilities to eliminate pests.
  • Read technical information needed to perform maintenance or repairs.
  • Troubleshoot equipment or systems operation problems.

  • Order materials, supplies, or equipment.
  • Plan work procedures.
  • Paint surfaces.
  • Record time; and information about parts, materials or repair procedures.
  • Measure distances or dimensions.

  • Estimate costs for labor or materials.
  • Load and unload trucks.
  • Respond to the public.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Mechanical- Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.

  • Building Maintenance- Planning and doing the basic maintenance on the building.
  • Manual Dexterity- Holding or moving items with your hands.
  • Arm-Hand Steadiness- Keeping your arm or hand steady.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; and
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid state driver's license.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Additional years of experience in custodial or janitorial work or building maintenance.
  • Forklift certification.
  • Experience with Microsoft Suite.

Supplemental Information

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT: Employee shall establish their principal place of residence within fifty (50) miles of their place of employment as soon as practical after appointment, but within two years of appointment.
