The Senior Animal Health Tech performs standard paraveterinary health care procedures under general supervision of the Manager of Veterinary Services,. These procedures may include a wide variety of standard repetitive procedures within one clinical or diagnostic specialty, or a limited variety of highly specialized non-standard procedures requiring ingenuity, resourcefulness and adaptability. High level of technical proficiency acquired through years of experience as an AHT in a research facility is needed to perform assigned tasks. The position includes responsibility for the oversight of the health and well-being of all or specific animal subjects in the Vivarium. The Senior Animal Health Tech will participate in teaching activities by demonstrating techniques or procedures to researchers and staff. The Senior Animal Health Tech will participate in writing, reviewing and training other staff members and research staff with regard to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) specific to biohazardous animals and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) compliant research activities. Train researchers and technical staff on biomethodology, medical and surgical care, husbandry and use of laboratory animals. The Senior Animal Health Tech will maintain records as necessary to comply with USDA, FDA, DEA, GLP and Comparative Medicine regulations and policies as well as AAALAC Int. standards for accreditation. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Observes of all or specific animal subjects daily to assess health and welfare. Take appropriate action and communicate observations/actions to veterinarian(s), manager, AHTs, and Primary Investigator/research staff. Assists with large animal surgical and imaging procedure prep and support (IV catheter placement, intubation, clip hair/prep skin, remote delivery/pick up). Stores, administers, and maintains appropriate pharmaceutical records-including controlled substance logs. Maintains working knowledge of IACUC protocols and SOPs (to include hazardous agents) pertaining to the active large and small animal protocols Provides relief for rabbit, rodent and large animal daily care proficiently within baseline responsibilities (as needed during periods of staff shortage or unusually high workload). Evaluates, medicates, and monitors all pre-surgical animals as needed. Provides post-operative management and care for animals undergoing surgical procedures. Employs methods to prevent, control, diagnose and treat diseases and injuries of animals and maintains appropriate veterinary health records. Records vital and necessary information pertinent to health of animals Assists with ensuring regulatory compliance (Post-Approval Monitoring) and operation within veterinary ethical standards.ring) and operation within veterinary ethical standards. Records keeping and billing: facilitates submission of required documentation, ensures entry into appropriate recordkeeping system. Captures charges for items not recorded in electronic medical records. Primary Areas: 1. Large Animal (specifically canine and swine)Coordinates receiving and acclimation. Creates and maintains electronic medical records. Participates in kick-off meetings for new protocols. Responsible for post-procedure care. Calculates and prepares routine standard dosing for analgesia and performs sedations for scheduled non-surgical procedures according to approved protocol. Performs post-mortem tissue collection as requested. 2. Davis Rodent ColonyMaintains supplies necessary for diagnostic laboratory submissions. Facilitates sample submission to outside reference lab. Performs antemortem and post-mortem tissue collection as requested. Inputs monthly diagnostic lab billing. 3. Researcher Rodent Biomethodology TrainerDevelops training techniques and reference documents. Demonstrates adaptability and advance knowledge; train the trainer. Specialty Areas: 1. Large Animal Core Surgical Facility (Sx AHT)reserved for highly qualified team members. Assist and/or independently calculate, prepare, and administer routine standard dosing for anesthesia and analgesia; maintains appropriate records-including controlled substance logs. Induce and monitor anesthesia for various large animal species. Operates specialized core surgical equipment. Prepares and sterilizes surgical instruments and equipment according to approved standards. 2. Controlled Substance Technicianunder supervision of the Manager of Veterinary Services, participates in overseeing the Research Institutes Controlled Substance user program. Team Leads: 1. Large Animal Core Surgical Facility Lead (Lead Sx AHT)In addition to duties assigned to Sx AHT, the Lead Sx AHT reviews, and approves surgical schedule requests, suggests staff allocation needed to meet approved schedule. Calculates and prepares complex dosing for anesthesia and analgesia according to the approved protocol (including the use of multi-modal therapy during anesthesia and perioperative periods). Performs routine PM on Sx Core isoflurane anesthesia machines. 2. Imaging Core Support Lead (Lead Imaging AHT)In addition to monitoring anesthesia during PET and/or MRI procedures, the Lead Imaging AHT reviews, and approves imaging schedule requests, suggest staff allocation needed to meet approved schedule. Performs routine PM on Imaging Core isoflurane anesthesia machines. 3. Rodent Biosecurity LeadPrepares sample collection templates, submits online test requests, maintains records. Schedules live sentinel processing with vendors.
