TITLE: Health Assistant - Personal

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Provide for the health and safety needs of students. Assist special education teachers with individualized instruction, specifically targeting the unique health and safety needs of an individual student.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Education and/or experience equivalent to High School Diploma or GED
  2. State of Arizona Identity Verified (IVP) Fingerprint Clearance Card
  3. Three years training and/or experience working in the medical field (preferred)
  4. Three (3) years of experience working with special needs children (preferred)
  5. Ability to obtain certification in Nonviolent Physical Crisis Intervention, CPR, and First Aid
  6. Special training in the use of medical and/or adaptive equipment (may be required upon hire)
  7. Current AZ DHS certification as a hearing screener, or ability to attend class to obtain certification upon hire

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide for the health and safety needs of assigned student, including medication administration, medical procedures, monitoring health needs, and documentation of health care.
  • Complete relevant district trainings for supporting students with specific health conditions.
  • Assist teacher in meeting individualized educational plan (I.E.P.) goals.
  • Assist and accompany student for inclusion in regular classroom.
  • Aid student with hygiene, including changing diapers and assisting with toilet training.
  • Provide a safe environment for students in which to learn.
  • Works with students on a variety of subjects or in one-on-one or small group instruction.
  • Monitor and supervise students in classroom, playground and cafeteria settings.
  • Assist in administering District and State tests.
  • Attend educational training as required.
  • Provide support to health offices when needed.
  • May in the absence of student, assist school nurse in administering first aid.
  • May in the absence of student, assess injuries and illnesses according to district guidelines and school nurse consultation.
  • Follow appropriate universal precautions to prevent the spread of diseases.
  • May in absence of student, contact parents to update immunization and emergency information.
  • May in the absence of student, assist with scheduling and conducting health, vision and hearing screenings; record screening results.
  • May in the absence of student monitor students in health office; administer medications, communicate appropriately with students, parent and teachers.
  • May in the absence of student answer phones, take messages and greet students, staff and parents at the health office.
  • May in the absence of student, assist with hearing and vision screenings at different schools within the District.
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Attend meetings as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI), CPR and First Aid certification
  • Ability to obtain and/or maintain AZ DHS hearing screener certification
  • Ability to work with culturally diverse students

PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Repetitive motion and eye strain through extensive utilization of computer hardware and software

Bending, stooping and standing

May be required to lift up to 50lbs to assist students

May be required to lift, transport, and set up hearing and vision screening equipment and supplies with possible combined weight of 25 pounds

May need to lift and carry laptop computer
