Overview

The City of Chesterfield is accepting applications for the position of Parks Maintenance Worker.

Responsibilities

* Physically participates in the construction and maintenance of park, recreation, beautification areas, rights-of-ways, and public grounds;

* Maintenance and repair of all park equipment, tools, and supplies;

* Assists in turf maintenance programs for a high quality sports complex, parks, beautification areas, rights-of-ways, and public grounds;

* Assists in the planning, organization, implementation and maintenance of various types of landscapes within the City. Areas include but are not limited to traditional perennial and annual plantings, large native grass lands, trees, wildflower areas and wetland locations;

* Operates moderately heavy landscape equipment including mowers, tractors, earth tillers, landscape rakes and blades, augers and skid loaders, backhoes, dump trucks, and loaders;

* Performs a wide range of duties associated with the maintenance and operation of an athletic facility;

* Assists in maintenance of tools, equipment and facilities. Knowledgeable in care and use of equipment;

* Sets up, cleans up and prepares for various civic or recreational programs or activities;

* Safely operate heavy trucks and pull equipment floats, trailers and haul materials to work sites;

* Operates snowplow-equipped truck to spread salt, and participates in other snow removal activities as assigned;

* Assists other divisions and departments during emergencies and is on-call to respond;

* Assists in the supervision, maintenance and implementation of programs; and

* Performs other duties as assigned.

Skill Requirements

Knowledge

Knowledge of principles and practices associated with the general maintenance and operations of parks and recreation facilities, working knowledge of work hazards and safety precautions. Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in developing and maintaining athletic fields and park facilities. Working knowledge of irrigation systems. Knowledge of standard hand and power equipment employed in the propagation and cultivation of athletic turf and grass areas.

Must be able to adeptly handle multiple priorities, problems, and demanding situations; possess strong written and oral communication skills; be able to look toward the future, while dealing with the demands of the present; possess strong planning and organizational skills; possess a strong customer service orientation; and be a team player.

Abilities

Ability to withstand exposure to variable weather conditions and to do work that is generally out of doors with long and varied hours such as days, nights, weekends and holidays. Must be able to bend, kneel, stoop, reach and lift. Must be able to stand for extended periods of time, operate equipment up to fifty percent of the day, and where noise and interruptions prevail. May be required to move tables, chairs, cabinets, equipment, supplies, etc. to maximum of 100 pounds. Must be able to work with potentially dangerous chemicals and equipment. Requires alertness, precision, memory, concentration, judgment, reasoning, patience, problem solving, and imagination. Must be quality minded safety conscious, people and service oriented, a team player and self-starter. Ability to operate Park Division vehicles and heavy equipment at an advanced level. Ability to do heavy manual work requiring good physical condition. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Ability to lead other workers as assigned.

Minimum Education, Certification and Experience

Minimum of one year experience in maintenance operations. High school diploma or equivalent required. Meet all DOT physical requirements. Valid Class B Commercial Driver's license within sixty (60) days of employment. Must maintain a valid and safe driving record. State of Missouri Pesticide Applicators License, National Playground Safety Inspectors Certification, International Society of Arborist Certification, CPR and AED certifications are desired.

Compensation

This is a full-time, non-exempt, position with a minimum hourly rate of $23.25 ($48,357 annually).
