Job Details

Distinguishing features of work:

Under direct supervision, assists the court by opening and closing court sessions, calling witnesses, supervising jurors, and maintaining courtroom order and security; patrols County building hallways and corridors for security purposes.

Illustrative examples of work:

* Prepares courtroom for use by providing adequate supplies of paper and pencils, water in appropriate containers, and other materials for use during court; reports to proper authority problems with heating/cooling and ventilation system; assists Court Clerks, court reporters and attorneys by securing files, exhibits and law books needed in court.

* Opens and closes court; calls witnesses; maintains order during court sessions, preventing smoking, undue conversations, noise and any other actions which would disrupt the progress of the case in session; ejects persons violating the orderliness of the court at the direction of the presiding judge.

* Maintains court security, providing protection to all participants; guards and prevents escape of the defendant(s) during court sessions of criminal cases.

* Supervises the activities of jurors; directs jurors to proper courtroom and seat; provides for proper juror segregation during recesses and deliberations to prevent the exertion of outside influences upon them; accompanies jurors during on-site field viewings and meals as directed.

* Confers with the court and assists Court Clerks in executing the courts instructions as regards housing, transportation, and other details in cases requiring the sequestering of the jury.

* Informs judge, Court Clerk, and attorneys upon notification that a verdict has been reached in jury trials: summons jury, receives verdict from foreman, and presents same to Court Clerk for reading.

* Maintains Court House security by patrolling hallways and corridors, remaining alert and observant of potential trouble situations and taking judicious action as authorized and appropriate.

* Accompanies and maintains security of defendants in transit to and from temporary holding cells and/or guards defendants while in temporary holding cells needed.

* Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Job Requirements

Education: Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to the completion of four years of high school.

Experience: Requires successful completion of the Mandatory Firearms Training Program through the Local Government Law Enforcement Officers Training Board within a reasonable period of time following employment.

Requires possession of a valid Illinois Vehicle Operator's License in the appropriate classification required by law.

Requires elementary knowledge of basic law enforcement security procedures and operations.

Requires elementary knowledge of public relations theory and technique.

Requires ability to provide appropriate segregation and supervision of jurors.

Requires ability to function effectively both verbally and in writing.

Requires ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with St. Clair County personnel, the court system, and the general public.
