Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Able to meet physical demands of the role including:
    • Can lift 50 pounds
    • Able to work on one's feet for 4 hours
    • Can climb and work on a ladder /scaffold up to 20 feet high
    • Can work on hands and knees for 15 minutes at a time
    • Can move, with assistance, all standard school furniture
  • Knowledge of basic methods, supplies, and tools used in custodial work
  • Ability to read operating instructions and write reports
  • Knowledge of preventive maintenance procedures
  • Ability to work with supervisors, fellow custodians, students, staff, parents and other community members

Responsibilities:
  • Sweep, dust, clean, mop, wash and/or polish classrooms, restrooms, offices, gymnasiums, lunchrooms, and other areas as assigned.
  • Clean, move, and arrange furniture and equipment as required.
  • Clean and pick up papers and other debris on grounds and empty trash into proper containers.
  • Report major repairs needed or damage to school property promptly to the chief custodian or the principal.
  • Assist maintaining the outside appearance of the building including sweeping, removal of debris and removal of snow.
  • Water assigned planted areas.
  • Lock and unlock doors and gates as assigned.
  • Assist in floor maintenance and operate related equipment as assigned.
  • Make minor repairs to buildings and equipment as required or requested.
  • Set up and tear down of building equipment for activities.
  • Implement universal precautions when cleaning bodily fluids.
  • Unpack and distribute supplies when assigned.
  • Take down U.S. flag on each school day when assigned.
  • Dispose of trash, rubbish and waste as directed in compliance with local laws and ordinances.
  • Assist chief custodian with tasks when requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the chief custodian, the principal, Director of Buildings and Grounds. or other administrators.
