Description

Under the supervision of a Senior Recreation Supervisor, performs various duties associated with implementing, coordinating, and supervising recreation center programs. Responsible for routine custodial, clerical, programming, marketing, and instructional tasks associated with the facility and/or recreational activities. Supervision is exercised over recreation leaders and seasonal recreation aides. Work requires flexible hours (days, nights, and weekends). Work is reviewed through observation and results attained. Performs other work as required.

Examples of Duties

  • Develops, implements, and supervises recreation programs, summer camp, classes, special events and activities for all age groups and interests; recruits and hires class instructors, and determines class schedules and fees.
  • Prepares program information for brochure publication and registration, registers and enrolls participants, inform participants of class changes, cancellations, and refunds and evaluates class programs.
  • Coordinates scheduling of facility and ensures that the facility is effectively supervised and secured by the recreation staff.
  • Directs, schedules, reviews, and evaluates the work activities of subordinates, personnel, and contractual employees.
  • Investigates and resolves citizen complaints concerning classes, instructors, or the facilities.
  • Develops, organizes, and supervises summer camp
  • Promotes recreation programs through press releases, newsletters, and presentations.
  • Requisitions and maintains supplies and equipment for the recreation center.
  • Contacts local businesses, individuals, and community organizations for program support and participation.
  • Physically adapts recreation center for daily recreation center usage through the movement of recreation center apparatus.
  • Coordinate and organize registration for recreation, aquatic, summer camp, and special event programs in RecTrac and website.
  • Directs the research, analysis and preparation of special reports, studies and surveys.
  • Provides customer service and establishes relationships with patrons that frequent the facility.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED with four (4) years of experience in the development and implementation of recreation and leisure service activity programs. OR
  • An Associate's degree with two (2) years of experience in the development and implementation of recreation and leisure service activity programs;
  • At least one (1) year of the above experience must have been in a supervisory capacity.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours.
Licenses, Certifications or Registrations:
  • Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida driver's license. Applicants who possess a valid out of state driver's license must obtain the Florida driver's license within 10 days of employment.
  • Must obtain CPR and First Aid certification within six (6) months of employment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of basic computer skills.
  • Knowledge of a variety of recreational activities and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the rules and regulations governing the play of a variety of recreational games.
  • Knowledge of arts and crafts.
  • Ability to create and market special interest programs.
  • Ability to responsibly oversee the use of a recreational facility.
  • Ability to maintain simple records.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and courteous relationships with the public.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Skill in leading, demonstrating, and/or instructing one or more recreational activity.
  • Must be able to communicate with a large number of people or one-on-one.
  • Ability to safely and effectively run a summer camp program.
  • Ability to operate City vehicles and equipment in safe and efficent manner.

Physical and Mental Requirements:
  • The work is medium and requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, manual dexterity, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching , speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.
  • Ability to speak, read and write.
  • Ability to lift and move 8 ft. tables, 60" round tables, chairs, and other furnishings.
  • Ability to walk, run, and participate in activities which requires physical dexterity.
  • Ability to understand and communicate with co-workers and children.
  • Ability to work around excessive noise and various odors.
  • Ability to deal with stress associated with conflict between individuals.
  • Ability to use hands, fingers and wrists.
  • Ability to understand and communicate with subordinates, co-workers and children.
  • Ability to bend, sit, kneel, and lift during course of the day.
