CARPENTER Department: Facilities and Operations Bargaining Unit: Grand Rapids Educational Support Professional Association (GRESPA) Hourly Rate: According to the collective bargaining agreement JOB SUMMARY The Carpenter is a member of the Facilities Team. This position reports to the Supervisor of Maintenance and is responsible for assisting in the operation of the Maintenance Department. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Essential functions under the Americans with Disabilities Act may include any of the following duties, knowledge, and skills. Other essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following: Responsible for maintaining knowledge of schools and their construction, and perform repairs and renovations utilizing various kinds of building materials Estimate and procure materials and equipment as needed to complete assigned work, and plan, layout and organize own work with minimal supervision Install and repair various trade related building components including but not limited to, cabinets, countertops, flooring materials, ceiling tiles, window shades and blinds, drywall, masonry, commercial doors, frames, hardware and locks, and manufactured panel wall systems Respond to emergency situations to ensure the facilities are available as scheduled for use, and assist with off-hour emergency calls as needed 24 hours/day, 7 days/week Practice safe work habits Assist other departments as requested Promote continuous quality improvement with each work person. Work flexible work hours as required Interact with co-workers, administration, students, parents, and the community in positive, supportive and cooperative ways Other duties as assigned QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience: High School diploma or equivalent Minimum three years full time work experience as a Carpenter Preferred Qualifications: Training and experience in repairing automatic operated door systems State of Michigan Builders license Special Qualifications: Possess a driver's license, reliable vehicle, a good driving record Asbestos awareness training +/or licenses, or the willingness to receive required training within 6 months of employment Must possess personal hand tools of the trade Specialty power tools will be provided Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Demonstrated ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and schematics Demonstrated ability and experience to use hand tools, power tools, and equipment to perform tasks of the trade Demonstrated good attendance and punctuality Demonstrated ability to participate as a member of a team Demonstrated ability to work in a diverse environment Demonstrated working knowledge of building, life safety, and barrier free codes, and the ability to interpret building codes and implement necessary changes to District facilities to bring them into code compliance ADA REQUIREMENTS The physical demands, work environment factors, and mental functions described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. PHYSICAL DEMANDS The work is medium work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk, hear (in a quiet or noisy environment). Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust/focus. WORK ENVIRONMENT The noise level in the work environment is usually loud moderate. Some outdoor work may be required. MENTAL FUNCTIONS While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to compare, analyze, communicate both orally and in writing, copy, coordinate, instruct, compute, synthesize, evaluate, use interpersonal skills, compile, and negotiate.
