The California Department of Justice is hiring an attorney to join the Environment Section s Bureau of Environmental Justice. This position may be filled in Sacramento, Fresno, Oakland, Los Angeles, or San Diego.


The California Attorney General s Bureau of Environmental Justice is seeking a qualified attorney with an interest in high impact, cutting edge, and creative legal work that reduces pollution and improves public health in the most vulnerable communities across California. The Environment Section s Bureau of Environmental Justice handles a broad range of significant environmental matters on behalf of the Attorney General and the State of California that raise equity and environmental justice concerns. Bureau of Environmental Justice team members work to proactively enforce a broad variety of state and federal environmental laws, such as the Proposition 65 (the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act), the National Environmental Policy Act, the California Environmental Quality Act, the Hazardous Waste Control Law, and the Unfair Competition Law. They also initiate and pursue government investigations under the Government Code, including issuing and enforcing investigative subpoenas, and litigate common law claims, such as public nuisance. This position is focused on environmental justice in the application and enforcement of these and other state and federal environmental laws.


This position allows telework. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksite with minimal notification if an urgent need arises. California residency is required.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be an active member of the California State Bar


Salary Ranges (Monthly)

  • DAG (0-5 years of legal experience) $7,737.00 - $11,173.00
  • DAG III (5+ years of legal experience) $10,536.00 - $13,526.00
  • DAG IV (6+ years of legal experience) $11,644.00 - $14,954.00
