Salary: Consistent with the existing collective bargaining agreement salary schedule.
Reports to: Director of Operations
Hours: 3:00-11:00 p.m., 8 hours/day

PRIMARY PURPOSE:
To provide students with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean and efficient place in which to learn, play and develop. To be responsible for the cleaning and maintenance of a building. To perform manual or unskilled labor tasks involved and minor repair work.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Keep building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways and play areas neat and clean at all times.
  2. Regulate heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide temperatures appropriate to the season and to ensure economical usage of fuel, water and electricity
  3. Snow removal from sidewalks, driveways, parking areas and steps as appropriate
  4. Check daily to ensure all exit doors are open and all door hardware is working correctly during the hours of building occupancy
  5. Lower the United States flag at or after 3:30 PM each school day
  6. Clean corridors after school each day, and during the day when their condition requires it
  7. Clean and disinfect bathrooms, toilets, sinks, floors and empty waste receptacles daily
  8. Keep the grounds free from garbage
  9. Perform yard keeping chores, such as grass cutting, weed removal, sweeping walks and steps, trim hedges and bushes and the like, as necessary, to maintain the school grounds in a safe and attractive condition
  10. Keep all floors clean, attractive, and in a good state of preservation
  11. Operate and utilize scrubber, buffer and wet-dry vac machines in the care of floor maintenance which includes rug care
  12. Make such minor building repairs as needed
  13. Report major repairs promptly to your superior or principal of the needed repairs
  14. Maintain a regular schedule for all motors and other mechanical equipment requiring service
  15. Report any damage to school property to superior or principal immediately
  16. Remain on the school premises during school hours and non-school hours as needed when the use of the building has been authorized, and the principal or their imediate supervisor requires their attendance
  17. Assume responsibility for the opening and closing of the building each school day and for determining, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off
  18. Keeps an inventory of supplies, equipment and fuel on hand, and requisitions such need replacements from the principal far enough in advance so that they may be delivered in such time as will not hinder the custodian in his/her duties
  19. Conduct an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep and repair
  20. Move furniture or equipment within building as required for various activities and as directed by the principal or immediate supervisor
  21. Comply with local laws and procedures for storing and disposing of trash, rubbish, and waste
  22. Assume responsibility for the safe condition of the swimming pool, if the building has one, making all necessary water tests, backwashing the filters and refilling the pool as necessary
  23. Conduct periodic inspections and tests of all electrical installations in the building to ensure their safe condition
  24. Perform all other maintenance or custodial duties as assigned by the principal, vice principal, or supervisor.

ADDITIONAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ATTITUDE:
  1. Sufficient successful experience in cleaning and general maintenance of a building, and aptitude and ability to perform the work assigned
  2. Possess a working knowledge of cleaning methods, materials and equipment, and use of simple mechanic tools
  3. Be able to follow instructions, make minor repairs, sweep, scrub and mop floors, mow lawns and keep walks clean, remove snow, remove garbage and waste
  4. Be reliable, careful, neat and courteous
  5. Demonstrate aptitude for successful fulfillment of assigned performance responsibilities
  6. Previous school district maintenance experience preferred

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  1. Ability to reach above and below the waist
  2. Ability to use fingers to pick, feel and grasp objects
  3. Some stooping, bending and twisting of the body required
  4. Ability to lift and/or carry supplies and/or papers weighing no more than 50 lbs
  5. Ability to sit, stand, walk or move throughout the building and/or office, often for extended periods of the workday

  1. Salary and work year to be established by the Board of Education.
