JOB TITLE:

Grounds Worker

QUALIFICATIONS:

REPORTS TO:

Grounds Supervisor

JOB GOAL:

To provide students with an attractive and safe, natural environment in which to learn.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Maintains and cares for school grounds.

2. Prepares seeding or transplanting beds by cultivating soil and adding fertilizer or chemicals, if needed.

3. Plants seeds, bulbs, tree seedlings, and shrubbery so that resulting growth will produce an attractive appearance.

4. Experiments with different varieties of lawn and flower seeds to determine those best suited to the soil.

5. Prunes trees and trims hedges to promote growth and improve appearance.

6. Mows lawn with push and or power mower.

7. Connects sprinkling equipment and waters lawn and flowerbeds.

8. Inspects flowers, shrubs, and trees for evidence of insects, fungi, and other pests and sprays or dusts chemicals on infected areas.

9. Adjusts and repairs such equipment as lawnmowers, sprinklers, and hedge shears.

10. Shovels snow from sidewalks and driveways and spreads sand, salt, or ashes to prevent slipping.

11. Collects and disposes of leaves and refuse.

12. Repairs outdoor chairs and benches.

13. Works inside during winter on assigned custodial jobs.

14. Perform other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of the, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and to talk or to hear. The employee must squat, stoop, kneel, reach above the head, and reach forward. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp items during the day.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to fifty pounds. Occasionally, the employee will lift and/or move up to ninety pounds. Additionally, the employee, while performing the duties of this job, will regularly work indoors and will occasionally work outdoors. The employee may also work at times with caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, sprays, and non-household item dust. The noise level of the work environment is usually moderate, but on rare occasions the employee will work in a loud area.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and work year to be established by the Board.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Support Services Personnel.
