Description

The purpose of this classification is to perform technical and skilled Automotive Body Shop maintenance, upgrades, and repairs of damages, and painting of all City Fleet vehicles and equipment.

Examples of Duties

Examines damaged vehicles and prepares estimate of repairs to be performed: operates computer diagnostic machines and other diagnostic tools; completes and orders a list of parts necessary to perform repairs.

Removes excessively damaged parts and attaches replacement parts using the appropriate tools: removes upholstery, accessories, trim, etc. to gain access to the vehicle's body and fenders.

Assists other employees in the Fleet Maintenance department when interior or exterior of a vehicle needs to be dismantled in order to complete necessary work.

Performs repair functions: repairs dents and fills depressions with appropriate materials; fabricates parts on special projects; repairs door, hood, and trunk latches; installs or replaces windshields, back glasses, and windows; seals to correct or prevent water leaks; repairs vehicle safety features, such as airbags, anti-lock brakes, and sensors; performs welding, when needed; performs major and minor electrical system tracings and repairs to doors and windows; files, grinds and sands repair surfaces using required tools; paints and refinishes repaired surfaces.

Builds and installs dog cages and security systems in all police units.Conducts State Motor Vehicle Inspections.

Completes necessary paperwork pertaining to all aspects of maintenance and repair performed on vehicles.

Operates or uses various equipment, tools, and supplies in order to complete work assignments: operates and maintains air tools, sanders, paint guns, welders, cutting tools, frame machine, paint booth, mechanic tools, diagnostic tools and software, and other power or motorized equipment.

Typical Qualifications

High School diploma or GED, with vocational or technical training in automotive body repair; supplemented by three (3) years experience in automotive body repair work; or any combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this job.

Must possess a valid driver's license.

Will be required to obtain a valid State of Louisiana driver's license at time of appointment and maintain throughout employment for this classification.

Must obtain a State of Louisiana Motor Vehicle Inspections certification within six months of hire.
