Cloudflare provides cutting edge security and performance services to a significant portion of the Internet. Because Cloudflare s network sits in front of so many websites, we regularly receive reports of abuse and legal requests relating to the customers for which we are an intermediary. We re looking for a Senior Counsel to work closely with our Trust & Safety and Public Policy teams in shaping Cloudflare s global approach to intermediary legal issues, our abuse processes, and our responses to criminal and civil requests for customer data.

The ideal candidate is comfortable confronting novel legal issues in a fast paced environment, while never losing sight of Cloudflare s core principles. We re looking for a self-starter who is enthusiastic to work as part of a great team building systems that must scale with a quickly growing company. As part of the job, you will:

  • Work with the Trust & Safety team to further develop playbooks for addressing reports of abuse on Cloudflare s platform, taking into account differences among the various services Cloudflare offers.
  • Assist the Trust & Safety team in identifying abuse reports raising novel issues, and coordinate across the Legal and Policy teams on responses.
  • Provide legal guidance to Trust & Safety to help further develop Cloudflare s policies and procedures for responding to legal requests for information.
  • Communicate with law enforcement, regulators, and civil litigants, and work with Cloudflare s litigation team in opposing unlawful requests in court.
  • Provide advice to product and engineering teams to understand and proactively address new products from a Trust & Safety perspective.
  • Work with the Policy and Trust & Safety teams on communicating to the public about our approach, including through Cloudflare s regular transparency reports.
  • Communicate with business leaders across the company about intermediary liability issues, and provide training and resources to address future legal risks.

You Have:

  • Admitted to practice law in the US
  • 8+ years of law firm, government, or in-house experience (preferably with technology companies).
  • Familiarity with relevant laws, including, for example the Stored Communications Act, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, and Section 230.
  • Preferred qualifications include familiarity with NCMEC reporting requirements, registrar obligations, and experience with online copyright and trademark issues.
  • Strong communication skills and cooperative team player. Lead with empathy and understanding while embracing diverse points of view. Flexibility to adapt and thrive in a fast paced environment.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally, with lawyers and non-lawyers, to establish principled, thoughtful, and effective solutions efficiently and in an amenable manner.
  • An ambitious mindset that enables you to successfully work independently and autonomously with limited guidance, but also to use good judgment and call out issues when needed.
