The Sports Editor works with the Editor-in-Chief to coordinate storytelling in its various forms across all platforms, including print, digital, and broadcast platforms, using words, photography, video and audio. The Sports Editor is primarily responsible for the ongoing coverage of UNF athletics, including games and player profiles, as well as other sports content of interest to UNF students, faculty and staff. The Sports Editor is also responsible for coordinating coverage with a team of sports reporters and volunteers. The Sports Editor may be asked to assist with Spinnaker's Breaking news coverage.

This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive. The employee may be asked to perform other related duties as required to meet the ongoing needs of Spinnaker. Employees must meet the responsibilities and qualifications of the position consistent with a minimum of 15 hours of competent effort each week. The Sports Editor will:

-Analyze information obtained from sources; Attend and cover games and press conferences; identify athletics and coaches for profile pieces
-Assist with Spinnaker Radio's Play-by-Play coverage
-Develop, in concert with the Editor-in-Chief, a weekly sports coverage plan, with particular emphasis on stories that concern UNF
-Complete at least three publishable, compelling, timely multimedia sports stories
-Meet daily with fellow editors to determine when stories will be completed and what elements they will have
-Assign stories to reporters and, when needed, provide reporters with a reasonable amount of background information, possible story angles, and potential contacts
-Establish deadlines for articles
-Communicate to fellow editors any changes or updates to a story, when a story will not be completed on deadline, and work to update the deadline
-Review submitted articles to ensure that all guidelines regarding libel/slander, factual accuracy, fairness, deadlines, privacy, and plagiarism are followed
-Post articles and corresponding photos or videos to Spinnaker's website
-Provide constructive feedback to reporters on articles submitted
-Attend required staff meetings and trainings
-Build and post office hours within the first week of the semester
Required Qualifications
Must be a current UNF student.
This position requires an understanding of the foundational principles of journalism and storytelling, a firm understanding of the legal/ethical issues of newsgathering, and good interpersonal and communication skills.

Must be continuously enrolled at UNF for the duration of the position and not be on academic probation or suspension as defined by the most recent University of North Florida course catalog.
Preferred Qualifications
Completed coursework in English, Communication, or Sporst Management is helpful but not required for the position.
