Harlem Children s Zone (HCZ) a world-renowned education and poverty-fighting organization based in New York seeks an enthusiastic, dedicated, and mission aligned Maintenance Worker to support our Facilities Department.

The Maintenance Worker will bring a passion for the mission of Harlem Children s Zone: break the cycle of intergenerational poverty with comprehensive, on-the-ground programming that builds up opportunities for children and families to thrive in school, work, and life.

The Maintenance Worker will join our Facilities department that maintains a clean and professional work environment within the buildings throughout the agency with minimal supervision. The ideal candidate will be able to perform routine maintenance/custodial checks and tasks to ensure that the assigned sites are being cleaned to the standard set by HCZ and other regulatory agencies (Health Department, Board of Ed).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Must have prior experience
  • Must pass a fingerprint background check and Physical/TB test
Who you are
  • Must be able to follow procedures for the safe use of cleaners and equipment, in order to prevent bodily harm and damage to the facility
  • Must be able to perform physical activities that require you to lift, push, pull or carry heavy/large objects
What you ll do
  • Gather and empty trash.
  • Service, clean, and supply restrooms.
  • Clean and polish furniture and fixtures.
  • Clean windows, glass partitions, and mirrors.
  • Dust furniture, walls, machines, and equipment.
  • Vacuum, steam-clean and/or shampoo carpets.
  • Sweep, mop, strip, seal, finish, and/or polish floors.
  • Clean laboratory equipment, such as glassware and metal instruments, using solvents, brushes, rags, and power cleaning equipment.
  • Follow procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment, in order to prevent damage.
  • Move heavy furniture, equipment, and supplies, either manually or by using hand trucks.
  • Notify the immediate supervisor of all facility-related items at the assigned site.
  • Remove snow from sidewalks, driveways, and parking areas as needed.
  • Requisition supplies and equipment needed for cleaning and maintenance duties.
  • Set up, arrange, and remove decorations, tables, chairs, ladders, and scaffolding to prepare facilities for events such as banquets and meetings
