Learning Support Specialist (LSS)

The Learning Support Specialist (LSS) is a 10-month faculty position who reports directly to the Director of Programs for Elementary and Adolescents. The LSS serves as a resource to the faculty, children and their parents to identify individual learning needs of children, implement strategies and/or interventions to address those needs, and to shepherd the Individual Learning Support (ILS) process.

To those ends, The Learning Support Specialist:

* Supports the classroom guides to identify teaching modification strategies to implement in the classroom environment.

* Supports guides through observations of children and recommendations for modifications for children with learning differences or additional developmental needs.

* Oversees and shepherds the ILS referral plan and evaluation process.

* Works directly with children to assess learning needs, implements learning strategies and evaluate learning progress.

* Maintains all ILS student records.

* Uses appropriate assessment tools to identify specific learning needs and/or modifications for children.

* Oversees yearly standardized testing and provides guidance for testing accommodations and proctoring support for children with learning differences.

* Assists the school's leadership in developing and implementing parent information sessions, as requested.

* Maintains an inventory of materials needed for teaching/learning modifications, e.g. weighted vest, hand strengtheners, mirrors, balance balls, sensitizing materials, etc.

* Establishes positive relationships with students which, while recognizing the differing roles of adult and child, are characterized by mutual respect and good will.

* Submits academic records and other records during the year as requested by the Head of school or his/her designee.

* Assists the classroom guides as needed with on-going communication with parents in regard to their childs needs including any needed input for 2 progress reports annually.

* In collaboration with the classroom guides, responds to parent questions and concerns and in a timely way characterized by mutual respect and good will.

* Is responsible, with the classroom guides, for the safety and physical well-being of the children at all times. The children are not to be visually supervised and not left unattended. Classroom ratios must be maintained on the playground as they are inside.

* Protects the peace and privacy of the children at work.

* Trains and supervises children as needed in the execution of evacuation, severe weather and lockdown drills. The routines are to be clearly established and the executed with dispatch and order.

* Reports any and all accidents and incidents at once. Prepares a written report stating date, time, nature of accident/incident, and action taken using the pre-prepared accident/incident report forms.

* Is self-aware and self-monitoring in identifying and solving student, curricular, and school issues.

* Notifies the head of school or director of education immediately of personal or professional difficulties with children, parents, or staff.

* Collaborates with colleagues and the school's leadership in the design and implementation of curriculum within the context of the school's overall program and Mission.

* Assists with other projects, programs and planning as assigned or requested by the head of school and/or his or her designee.

* Attends staff meetings, annual staff retreat, or any special meeting(s) as requested by the head of school and seeks out and reviews minutes from meetings not attended.

* Is committed to the WSM Characteristics of Professional Excellence (which forms the foundation of continuing professional development and evaluation at WSM).

* With the support of a faculty advisor, completes *The Faculty Self-Evaluation for Growth & Renewal*, and follows through on annual goals and objectives set through this process.

* Initiates growth and change in her/his own intellectual and professional development, seeking out conferences, courses, and other opportunities to learn.

* Participates in the establishment and maintenance of an atmosphere of collegial support and adherence to professional standards.

* Adheres to AMS guidelines and professional standards as a member school, for the purpose of maintaining quality and excellence.

* Models integrity, curiosity, responsibility, creativity, and respect for all persons as well as an appreciation for racial, cultural, and gender issues and diversity.

**COVID-19 considerations**: All staff are expected to be vaccinated and/or tested every week and are required to wear masks while at work. Our 2 6 year do wear masks at school (indoors and out). Frequent cleaning, & safe hygiene practices are followed. Ability to commute/relocate :Winston-Salem, NC: Reliably commute or planning to relocate before starting work
