Position Summary


The Environmental Technician is responsible for ecological restoration field work which includes invasive plant management, restoration and establishment of native plant communities, and installation of bioengineering materials, and maintenance associated with all facets of ecological restoration projects. ETs safely and effectively utilize hand tools, power tools, machinery, and herbicide for the purpose of protecting and restoring the biodiversity of our unique natural ecosystems.


The principal accountabilities include:

  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions on ecological restoration land management projects.
  • Identify and remove invasive plants through manual, mechanical, and chemical means.
  • Mix and safely apply herbicides through a variety of environmentally responsible methods.
  • Seed and plant nativegrasses, herbaceous plugs,shrubs, and trees
  • Install biodegradable erosion control materials
  • Use tools such as shovels,rakes, chainsaws, string/hedge trimmers, and brush mowers.
  • Maintain and perform minor repairs of tools and equipment
  • Drive vehicles and operate equipment, such as work trucks and skid steer loaders.
  • Comply with all WED safety rules and standards, as well as all WED policies and procedures.
  • Document daily field activities and project status
  • Read and follow WED Land Management Plans, Planting Plans and regulatory documents.


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Job Requirements

  • Valid Driver' s License is required. DOT Medical Card (to be acquired within 30 days of hi r e), MA Pesticide Applicator License (to be acquired within 60 days of hi re), Hoisting and Hydraulics License (to be acquired within 180 days of hire) to be acquired with support from WED.
  • High school diploma or GED certificate required; Bachelor' s degree in environmental science or related area a plus
  • l+ year of experience in a similar field-oriented position (landscaping, marine construction, nursery work).
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills w it h proven ability to work respectfully as a team.
  • Timely and dependable attendance.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and navigate rough, often steep terrain.
  • Ability to complete strenuous outdoor activity daily. This year-round position will have exposure to occupational hazards such as tick-borne illnesses, biting and stinging insects, and poison ivy.
  • This position is defined as a Safety-Sensitive Position at WED and would be subject to our random drug and alcohol testing program.
  • Typical day begins at 6:45am. Overtime may be required, and work schedules may include occasional Saturdays during peak season. This position will require periodic overnight travel.
