Summary

Under basic supervision, the Parks Maintenance Worker participates in the maintenance of the City park systems, pools, and other City facilities. Operates equipment such as tractors, backhoes, and other equipment used in the maintenance and construction of parks.

This position is a tentative "At-Will" appointment and subject to a probationary period of six (6) months from the date of hire. Upon successful completion of a probationary period, a non-management employee shall be granted regular status in the classification in which the probationary period is served.

Essential Functions

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Participates in the maintenance and light construction work at buildings and City parks or other assigned areas.
  • Performs maintenance of large turf areas and athletic fields including seeding, sodding, fertilizing, mowing, weed eating, and watering; adds dirt to fix baseball field and pitcher's mound.
  • Checks on ball fields to ensure proper game day preparations; checks on the turf areas to ensure proper mowing height and trimming of grass.
  • Operates light trucks, tractors, and other motorized equipment in parks construction and maintenance activities.
  • Maintains and repairs automatic and mechanical sprinkler systems at all City parks and other City facilities.
  • Performs and maintains City buildings to include carpentry, electrical, masonry, and plumbing tasks.
  • Cleans, services, and makes minor repairs to equipment; ensures maintenance shop, tools, and equipment are properly maintained and kept in proper working condition.
  • Maintains swimming pools, hot tub, and bathhouse; monitors and maintains pool filtration systems; monitors pool water chemicals through testing of water samples; adjusts chemistry as needed to maintain established standards; reports findings in daily pool log.
  • Repairs or replaces pool equipment to include lights, pumps, filters, and chemicals feeders and controllers.
  • Supervises seasonal employees and inmate workers.
  • Assists with preparing gravesites for burial services at the City cemetery.
  • Applies pesticide or herbicide as needed in various locations.
  • Performs related duties as assigned or required.
Knowledge of:
  • Applicable local, State, and Federal laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Methods, materials, tools, and practices used in maintenance repair and construction of parks, facilities, and pools.
  • Playground safety requirements and standards.
  • Proper and safe use of heavy automotive and power equipment used in maintenance work.
  • Occupational hazards and safety precautions related to work.
  • Records maintenance and retention policies and procedures.
  • Aquatic facility safety standards, requirements, and regulations.
  • Pool system components and troubleshooting and repair methods.
Skill in:
  • Troubleshooting and repairing pool and irrigation systems.
  • Collecting and accurately testing pool chemical levels and determining appropriate adjustments.
  • Maintaining completing basic repairs on tools and equipment.
  • Leading the work of assigned crew members.
  • Interacting tactfully and professionally with City staff, outside agencies, and the public.
  • Maintaining accurate records and logs.
  • Operating a variety of tools and equipment safely.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.


Minimum Qualifications

Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines High school diploma or GED equivalent AND two (2) years of experience in facilities, parks, or landscape maintenance; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license. Must possess or obtain an Arizona Department of Corrections (ADOC) Inmate Supervision Program certification. May be required to possess a Certified Pool Operator certification or obtain within (60) days of hire. Must possess pesticide and herbicide application certification or obtain within (6) months after date of hire.

Physical Demands/Working Environment

Work is performed at various City parks and recreation facilities and requires exposure to various outdoor weather conditions, potentially dangerous tools, equipment, and machinery, hazardous chemicals, electrical hazards, and potentially infectious diseases. May be required to climb, crouch, traverse uneven surfaces, and lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
