Job Details

The Executive Office of Veterans Services is seeking Cemetery Technicians to oversee a variety of essential maintenance tasks at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery (MVMC). The Cemetery Technician I is responsible for maintaining both the cemetery grounds and roadways, which includes tasks such as mowing, trimming, spraying, watering, and snow clearing to uphold the grounds' pristine condition. In addition to ensuring the preservation and reverence of veterans' final resting places, the Cemetery Technician I maintains rigorous standards of excellence. They compile and review data to assess maintenance effectiveness, promptly report any damage, and contribute to enhancing the grounds with floral or other designs while strictly adhering to cemetery specifications. With meticulous attention to detail, they carry out grave preparation, excavation, and landscaping, ensuring precision and safety throughout their work.

DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

* Monitors the activities involved in cemetery and roadways maintenance work.

* Performs specific tasks such as mowing, trimming, spraying, watering, planting, clearing snow, etc.

* Compiles and reviews data concerning effectiveness of cemetery maintenance activities and prepares reports for supervisor.

* Inspects damage to cemetery areas, roadways, parking lots, equipment, etc. as result of storms, vandalism and accidents.

* Plants floral or other designs for beautification of grounds.

* Performs grave preparation, excavation, and associated landscaping according to cemetery specifications, ensuring accurate placement and depth while adhering to safety protocols.

* Incumbents have the decision-making authority to: determine the necessary tools to safely perform tasks.

* All other duties as assigned.

Minimum Entrance Requirements:

Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in landscaping, groundskeeping, park or cemetery maintenance or tree maintenance work or, (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:

I. A diploma or certificate from a recognized trade, technical or vocational school with a major in landscaping may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience*.

II. An Associate's degree or higher with major in forestry or landscape architecture may be substituted for one year of the required experience*.

* Education toward such diploma, certificate or degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of requirements actually completed.

NOTE: Educational substitutions will only be permitted for a maximum of one year of the required experience.

Special Requirements:

I. Must possess a current and valid Massachusetts Hoisting License with at least 1C or 2A Endorsements within one (1) year of date of hire.

II. Must possess a current and valid Massachusetts Pesticide Applicator License (Core) OR Commercial License within one (1) year of date of hire.

Incumbents must possess a current and valid motor vehicle operator's license at a class level specific to assignment.
