167th Basic "Hybrid" School

This school is for applicants who ARE NOT currently certified by North Carolina in Basic Law Enforcement Training.

* Applicants for the 167th Hybrid School will be hired during the application process and will receive full cadet salary to attend a legacy Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) program at a local Community/Technical College of their choice during the Spring semester of 2025. Upon successful completion of BLET, applicants will then transition to a Short Basic School on the campus of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol Training Academy.*

As a member of our team, you will contribute to public safety by enforcing traffic laws and reducing crime on public streets and highways in North Carolina. Duties include assisting the public in emergencies; investigating highway accidents; apprehending violators of the law and/or issuing warnings; testifying in court; and assisting other law enforcement agencies to ensure public safety.

Basic Qualifications

To apply, an applicant:


* Must be 21 years of age by the first day of basic school and no more than 39 years of age on the first day of Basic School.

* Must have a High School diploma or equivalency (GED)

* Must score at or above a 10th grade reading level on standardized tests

* Must be a Citizen of the United States or Naturalized Citizen

* Cannot have committed ANY Felony Offense

* Cannot have been convicted of any SERIOUS misdemeanor offense

* Must have a valid drivers license and good driving record

* Must be willing to live and work in any area of the state of North Carolina

* Must have 20/30 vision in each eye: uncorrected vision of no more than 20/200 in each eye corrected to 20/30 in each eye

If an applicant meets the basic qualifications listed above, then the applicant must successfully pass the following stages of the application process before being considered for employment:


* Polygraph Examination

* Extensive Background Investigation

* First Sergeant Interview

* Medical/Physical Exam (including drug screening)

* Physical Fitness Assessment

* Psychological Examination

* Colonel's Review


A successful officer demonstrates the:

* Ability to learn, interpret and impartially apply the applicable provisions of the motor vehicle laws of North Carolina.

* Ability to collect and present information on patrol activities and investigations in oral and written form.

* Ability to deal with authority but courteously with the general public.

* Ability to read calmly and quickly under emergency conditions.

* Applicants are required to have a High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma

* Applicants must possess a valid North Carolina driver's license

Applicants are subject to and must meet the applicable education and training standards as defined and established by the NC Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission prior to engaging in law enforcement activities. This includes certification as a Law Enforcement Officer and completion of all training academy requirements.
