Position Summary / Career Interest:
Under minimal supervision the Biomedical Equipment Technician III will perform repair, calibration, preventive maintenance, inspection, and installation of a diverse range of diagnostic, therapeutic, and physiological monitoring equipment and systems used in direct patient care, including high risk and life support equipment as well as other complex systems

By following policies, procedures, and standards, they will assure compliance of the equipment they are responsible for and also assume responsibility for risk and safety issues associated with the position. When necessary, the employee will participate in performance improvement activities. Utilizing resources efficiently and effectively is a primary function of the position. It is the responsibility of the employee to bring ideas/concerns to their supervisor and participate in department decision-making.

Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned to meet business needs.
  • Performs repair, calibration, preventive maintenance, inspection, and installation of a diverse range of diagnostic, therapeutic, and physiological monitoring equipment and systems used in direct patient care, including high risk and life support equipment as well as other complex systems.
  • Diagnose and correct system and equipment malfunctions.
  • Ability to interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, illustrated parts drawings, and flow charts of biomedical instrumentation.
  • Ability to identify and troubleshoot Local Area Network, (LAN) components.
  • Collaborate with Information Systems to unsure Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliance and connectivity of Biomedical devices
  • Monitor completion of preventive maintenance activities performed by outside and third-party vendors.
  • Schedule and oversee vendor and third-party repairs as necessary.
  • Review outcome of preventive maintenance actions and make recommendations to department staff concerning improvements.
  • Supervise and instruct biomedical equipment personnel in the safe use, application, testing, and preventive maintenance and repair of all types of clinical equipment technologies and systems.
  • Provide operational leadership to personnel and possibly serve as temporary site manager in the absence of Biomedical Engineering Manager and Director as assigned.
  • Maintain accurate inventory, tracking both the addition and deactivation of clinical equipment
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation on new equipment, inspections, and equipment repairs and failures.
  • Understand and comply with Joint Commission and other applicable standards and regulations.
  • Must have a valid drivers license in order to be able to provide service to all TUKHS Biomedical Engineering Department customers.
  • Provide in-service educational programs to clinical staff as needed.
  • Provide technical assistance and instruction on equipment operation to medical staff as needed.
  • Recommend new equipment and testing procedures.
  • Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Required Education and Experience
  • High School Graduate
  • 4 or more years biomedical experience (an equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.)

Preferred Education and Experience
  • Associate of Science Electronics/Biomedical Equipment Technology
  • Bachelors Degree Electronics/Biomedical Equipment Technology

Required Licensure and Certification
  • Valid Driver's License

Preferred Licensure and Certification
  • Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET) - Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI)

Knowledge Requirements
  • Familiarity with Information Technology and networks
