About the Role: Steven Winter Associates, Inc (SWA) is currently on the search for an experienced and innovative Senior Energy Engineer with professional mechanical and HVAC experience. This positionwill be based in NYC within our Building Operations, Decarbonization & Efficiency (BODE) team. In this mechanical and energy engineering role you will conduct traditional energy audits, lead development and implementation of energy management projects that enhance efficiency and sustainability as well as manage decarbonization feasibility studies and provide retrofit consulting services for clients working to meet carbon-emission reductions as mandated by New York City Local Law 97. The proposed annual salary range for this position is $85,000 - $120,000 based on a 40-hour work schedule. The final salary may vary depending on confirmed job-related skills and experience.

Senior Energy Engineer / Mechanical Engineer Primary Responsibilities:

  • Conduct decarbonization feasibility studies, advanced energy audits and assessments, retrofit implementation, and retro-commissioning for energy savings and performance improvements in existing buildings.
  • Lead the development and implementation of innovative energy systems and projects, ensuring they meet efficiency, cost, and environmental standards.
  • Provide innovative solutions to technical challenges.
  • Inspect retrofits/upgrades of building equipment with a focus on electrification and heat pump technologies.
  • Review construction documents and provide recommendations to improve indoor air quality, energy efficiency, constructability, and building operations.
  • Train and support entry and mid level energy engineers.
  • Provide and/or facilitate technical training for building industry professionals.

Senior Energy Engineer / Mechanical Engineer Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Energy Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience working with HVAC systems in large multi-family or commercial buildings.
  • Thorough understanding of energy audits, feasibility studies, retro-commissioning, and retrofit services.
  • Demonstrated experience in design, implementation and management of small to medium energy projects.
  • Proficiency with energy modeling and simulation software (e.g., EnergyPlus, HOMER)
  • In-depth knowledge of energy systems, energy efficient technologies and sustainable design principles.
  • Leadership experience with the ability to mentor junior engineers / or possibly manage a team.
  • Experience in building automation and control systems.
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel and proficiency in other MS Office Programs.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, use hands to type, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear. The employee frequently is required to climb stairs, use elevators and exterior construction hoists, and may be exposed to cold and hot interior and exterior temperatures for extended periods of time (when in the field).

TRAVEL REQUIRED: Occasional overnight travel may be required (Less than 10%). Frequent local field visits in the Metro area will be necessary (approximately 40-50%). A valid and clean driving license is required.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: This is a hybrid position. Most of the duties will be performed in an home or office environment. The remainder of the duties will be performed in the field which will involve trips to projects sites for observation and training.
