Job Opening: College Guidance Counselor
Job Description: High School seeks a passionate and talented College Guidance Counselor to work with our student body of approximately 250 students in grades nine through twelve. The College Guidance Counselor will work with the Director of College Guidance to lead the college search and application process and help students to seek a "best fit" college.
The College Counselor reports to the Director to College Guidance and the Principal of General Studies.
Responsibilities:
1. To assume responsibility for counseling assigned students and their parents in regard to the entire college selection, application, essay and admission process.
2. To build relationships with assigned students through individual meetings and activities to gain a holistic view of each student.
3. To participate in school activities, both during and after school hours, where college counseling should be represented.
4. To review transcripts and student course selection in order to make recommendations that help students achieve their post high school goals.
5. To develop summary reports on students progress on standardized testing to the school community as appropriate.
6. To conduct individual and group sessions in all areas of college counseling.
7. To oversee visits to selected colleges and from selected college representatives.
8. To develop positive relationships with selected college admissions officers.
9. To remain current on trends in college counseling including technology.
10. To perform other duties as assigned by the Head of School or his designee.
11. To support the school and its leadership.
Requirements:
1. Relevant professional experience: college admissions or high school college counseling experience strongly preferred but not required.
2. Very strong written and verbal communication skills
3. Genuine interest in developing meaningful relationships with students
4. Outstanding organization skills and the ability to be flexible and work hard
5. Ability to communicate effectively with parents, students and faculty
6. An eagerness to remain current in national trends in college counseling and admissions, and a desire to learn and grow as a professional
7. Bachelor s degree required; Master s degree preferred
Compensation: $80,000 - $85,000, plus excellent benefits.
