Job Description

The Digital Fabrication and Technology Specialist at the College of Fine Arts (COFA) plays a pivotal role in nurturing the creative and innovative endeavors of our diverse student and faculty body. This position manages the college's digital fabrication, large-scale printing, and technology needs, and oversees the technological curricular support to a vibrant arts community. The position will be responsible for the management and training of student and part-time staff and will maintain or supervise maintenance of all College equipment and materials related to teaching and research in Digital Fabrication and curricular technology, while supervising equipment central check-out and software updates. This position instructs on multiple levels from traditional course format to training of staff to support more individualized technical tutorials regarding specialized processes, equipment, materials, and procedural methodologies.

Primary Accountabilities include:

Digital Fabrication and Technology Specialist:
a. Direct everyday operations of the Digital Fabrication and related technology. Maintain all equipment and materials to ensure they are at peak performance and that the equipment meets the needs of constantly evolving disciplines.
b. Supervise and instruct students and part-time workers, such as graduate assistants and shop monitors. Manage maintenance of systems, and systematic monitoring.
c. Supervise and train the staff for equipment check-out operations.
d. Manage the central equipment check-out system which includes maintaining equipment, verifying inventory, and supervising the loaning program for the specialized equipment.
e. This position is also responsible for researching, purchasing, budgeting, and supervising the receiving all of all related materials, instructional supplies, consumables, and equipment, including, but not limited to CNC, laser cutter, 3-D printers, Vinyl cutters, large-format printers as well as other related digital hardware and software. In addition to building a repair and replace fund for the associated technologies.

2. Mentoring and Training: Digital Fabrication and Technology Training Workshops, Auxiliary Technical Support of Classroom Projects, Safety Training + Policy Supervision/Enforcement.
a. Expertise in specific fabrication processes and equipment as well as Adobe Creative Cloud, Sound, Light and other arts-related technologies to leverage a team of students and part-time staff that will instruct students and faculty on productive, proper, and safe usage in the form of tutorials and training workshops.
b. Train staff to problem solve and redesign ways of approaching materials and processes as well as to assist students and faculty with technical support for their academic research.
c. Orient and instruct staff in OSHA safety training procedures.

3. Course Instruction and Curricular support:
a. Based on yearly curricular and skills needs, This position teaches 1will teach undergraduate- level courses for the School of Art + Design College of Fine Arts (typically within the School of Art+Design, or cross-disciplinary coursework as appropriate) as assigned by the School's Director Dean and School Directors. Typically, this position is responsible for more technical courses, where students learn object-making and/or large-format printing and a range of a range of digital fabrication or creation skills and techniques. If no courses are assigned for the year, this percentage of labor will move toward supporting instructors of record in their technology and fabrication curricular applications. Note that as a 12-month position, this activity may fluctuate such that it is a larger percentage of time during the academic semesters and less during the summer season.

4. Additional Duties as Assigned by the Dean of the College of Fine Arts and/or Director of the School of Art +Design
a. The incumbent is expected to be active in college and/or school leadership roles, curriculum discussions, recruitment efforts, and other operational duties pertinent to functionality as it relates to the college's Digital Fabrication shops and related technologies. This may include but is not limited to assigned committee work, professional development, ordering materials and supplies for faculty and students, collaborating with faculty and other colleagues in the field on technical innovation, producing + exhibiting, supervising and coordinating special projects, assisting local organizations with technical support and expertise, representing Ohio University at conferences, workshops and residencies, attending arts events and/or lectures, and all-in-all, being an ambassador for the arts.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts or related field.
At least one (1) year of related work experience with at least one (1) year of management and/or supervisory experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Masters degree in Fine Arts or related field.
