JOB SUMMARY:

Under minimal supervision, this position ensures that all military members, Veterans, and military-affiliated dependents are provided with accurate and timely information, support, and advisement in all aspects of their journey from recruitment to graduation. Assists in planning, organizing, and monitoring activities and programs related to Military and Veterans services. Assists in creating an inclusive campus environment to address the unique needs of student Veterans and military-connected students. Develops and administers programs and services at IRSC that help remove barriers to the success for military students and student Veterans. Manages a caseload of assigned students and working with those students through degree or certificate completion. Participates in community outreach initiatives to promote IRSC partnerships and collaboration.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides specialized academic advising to military and veteran students. Provides support and guidance to students in the planning and achievement of educational and career goals while monitoring student progress. (20%)
  • Assists students in applying for Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA) educational programs and navigate available federal and state resources. (15%)
  • Submits, monitors and reports enrollment certifications to the DVA utilizing VA Enrollment Management. (10%)
  • Evaluates military training and experience for college credit based on the American Council on Education (ACE) recommendations and Joint Services Transcripts (JST), interpreting previous college coursework and military transcripts to assist in the award of accelerated credit and development of Academic Plans (10%)
  • Reviews degree audits with students to make sure they understand program requirements and their progress toward their degree or certificate. (10%)
  • Participates in recruitment and retention efforts through both on-campus and community activities. (5%)
  • Maintains a high level of knowledge regarding all IRSC instructional programs, services, and information important to student success. Commits to developing in-depth knowledge and methods to manage, track and support a significant student-veterans caseload from enrollment through degree/certificate completion. (15%)
  • Employs appreciative advising to ensure the student-veterans success from admissions to graduation. (10%)
  • Completes other duties and responsibilities as assigned. (5%)


  • QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor's degree and relevant work experience.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of related experience and/or training that includes academic advisement, academic retention, financial aid, and the administration of military and VA educational benefits.
  • Demonstrate experience working with and advising military and veteran students in an educational setting.
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with the sociological background of veterans.
  • Ability to work productively, independently and as a team member.
  • Possess strong written, oral, and relational skills.
  • Ability to network and build professional relationships with students, staff, faculty, and community members.
  • Must be student-centered and customer service oriented.
  • Ability to work with a diverse population.
  • Exhibit sound judgment and discretion when working with students, student records, and the general public.
  • Ability to maintain strict accuracy and be detail-oriented


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This position requires an ability to sit, stand for long periods of time, walk, bend, lift, reach up, stoop, and carry items occasionally in excess of twenty-five (25) pounds. It also requires manual dexterity to operate standard office machines, such as, copier, fax, telephone, and other equipment as necessary. IRSC expects its employees to follow proper safety standards while employed by the College.
