Job Details

The Jackson Generation facility is a two 1x1 natural gas-fired combined cycle plant with Mitsubishi 501JAC Gas Turbines, Mitsubishi SRT-40 Single Cylinder Reheat Steam Turbines, John Cockerill (previously CMI) Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSG's), Hitachi 758MVA Generators, Holtec Air Cooled Condensers and uses Emerson DCS as main control interface. The plant has gas supply from 3 sources and provides energy to the PJM market in ComEd Zone, south of Chicago.

Opportunity Summary

The Control Room Operator (CRO) is responsible for continuously monitoring the status of all plant systems. The CRO ensures that alarms and upset conditions are properly addressed by taking appropriate corrective actions. Additionally, the CRO executes plant shut-down and start-up procedures as required, ensuring that the plant meets its generating requirements while operating safely and efficiently.

Primary Duties

  • Ensure that the daily log and other plant records are filled out in a timely and accurate manner. This includes documenting electrical output, steam output, emissions output, fuel consumed, water consumed, and heat rates.
  • Conduct periodic reviews of logs and records to ensure that tag-out procedures, equipment status, and designated administrative systems are functioning effectively.
  • Operate the plant proficiently via a remote Distributed Control System (DCS). Periodically, equipment may need to be operated locally via PLC panel interfaces.
  • Competently operate and maintain a combined cycle generating facility and all associated auxiliary and support equipment with minimal guidance or assistance.
  • This position requires making operating decisions based on plant procedures, environmental regulations, safety procedures, and sound judgment based on operating data.
  • Manage the start-up and shut-down procedures of the plant, ensuring all processes are conducted safely, efficiently, and in accordance with established protocols.
  • Participate in the administrative maintenance of plant operating manuals, technical references, prints, diagrams, and preventive/predictive maintenance records.
  • Actively support the Maintenance Team in the execution of maintenance plans by providing support such as Lockout/Tagout, equipment identification, troubleshooting, work request preparation, or other areas as needed.
  • Fully support and actively participate in NAES Safety and Regulatory Compliance Programs.
  • Complete other tasks as requested by the Operations Manager or Lead Control Room Operator.

Working Relationships

The CRO reports to the Operations Manager. The CRO cooperates with and responds to directions from the Operations Manager and Lead Control Room Operator. The CRO gives direction to maintenance personnel on matters pertaining to plant operations and gives direction to O&M Technicians.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include the possibility of standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g., hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves, and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.

Fitness for Duty

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening.

Work Schedule

This position entails a rotating 5 and 2 work schedule, starting with a period of day shifts only, followed by a transition to a pattern of five days on and two days off, then two days on and five days off. Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, work load and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required.

Compensation

The initial starting compensation will range from $43 to $53 per hour.

Job Qualifications

  • Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired in four years of high school is required. An Associate Degree in a technical field is desirable.
  • Extensive working knowledge of the power plant industry is highly desirable, encompassing various types of power generation technologies and industry best practices.
  • Substantial experience as a Control Room Operator or in an equivalent position in an operating or generating plant is required. Experience specifically in the direct operation of a combined cycle large frame gas turbine power plant is preferred.
  • Proficiency in water chemistry control, including water condition analysis, water treatment facility operations, and chemical handling requirements, is desired.
  • Strong theoretical and practical understanding of combustion/steam turbine operations, closed system generation, industrial safety, hazardous waste management, and the inspection/recording of plant parameters is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with piping and instrument schematics, as well as process control systems, is desirable.
  • Ability to successfully complete the NAES Operator Qualification Program within the policy-defined period is essential.
  • Exceptional organizational, oral, and written communication skills are required.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Drivers License at all times.
