The Cochise County Library District operates five branch libraries in rural areas across Cochise County (Bowie, Elfrida, Portal, Sunizona, and Sunsites) and provides support services for seven municipal libraries operated by their towns or cities (Benson, Bisbee, Douglas, Huachuca City, Sierra Vista, Tombstone, and Willcox). The Library District has operated as a Cochise County department since the 1980s, with a headquarters in Bisbee.
The On-Call Library Assistant provides backup and substitute coverage at the Library District offices in Bisbee, at rural branch locations, and as part of the library courier system. Under close supervision performs work of moderate difficulty in providing general and technical library services.

Essential Functions

(Illustrative Only) Serves as a backup or substitute for staff at the Library District headquarters or rural branch locations; provides backup coverage for the library mail clerk/courier service and the library delivery service for individuals who are home-bound or institution-bound. Utilizes the countywide computer system to check materials in and out; processes and shelves library materials; retrieves library materials to fill requests; assists users with problems and inquiries. May perform other related work as required or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED certification and one (1) year experience of general library experience; thirty (30) semester hours from an accredited college or university in any discipline may substitute for the one (1) year of general library experience; OR, an equivalent combination of experience, education, and training which provides the desired knowledge, skills, and abilities of this classification; must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver's License and the ability to be covered by county insurance.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Working knowledge of:

  • standard library practices and procedures;
  • general office procedures;
  • intermediate level Internet/computer searching skills.

Ability to:
  • learn and utilize the countywide online library system;
  • work independently on detail-oriented projects and tasks;
  • learn basic computer trouble-shooting and maintenance;
  • establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public;
  • read, write and speak English;
  • communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
  • follow verbal and written instruction;
  • operate a large vehicle safely.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is primarily performed under direct supervision. Incumbent generally performs work in a typical office building setting and a county vehicle with appropriate climate controls and out of doors in varying conditions.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Essential functions of this position require: lifting up to 50 pounds, manual dexterity, ability to communicate.
Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body; involves sitting only occasionally, walking and standing are required regularly, incumbents may be required to kneel, crouch/squat, crawl, climb, stoop, turn/twist, balance, reach, feel or manipulate with hands.
Mental Application: Utilizes memory for details and verbal instructions, requires emotional stability, critical thinking and adaptability; creative problem-solving skills.
