The Hopewell Power Station is a biomass facility situated in Hopewell, VA, with a capacity of 51 MW. It employs biomass-fired power generation technology to produce electricity, which is sold to Dominion. Additionally, the facility processes steam for sale. By utilizing biomass as a fuel source, the Hopewell Power Station plays a crucial role in reducing dependence on fossil fuels while contributing to the generation of renewable energy.

Opportunity Summary

The Auxiliary Operator (AO) assists in the safe and efficient operation of the power plant and the supporting equipment and systems. The AO carries out all routine water/gas chemistry analysis, inspects and monitors operating components and reports plant status.

Primary Functions

  • Assist in start-up, shutdown and normal operations of power plant systems.
  • Operate major auxiliary apparatus such as: air compressors, circulating water systems, boiler feed-water treatment system, waste water systems, generator cooling system, boiler feed-water and condensate systems, and locally controlled electrical and mechanical equipment.
  • Perform operating tests and inspections, and make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment assigned to achieve proper operating conditions.
  • Execute orders from the Control Room Operator at isolated panels for clearing equipment or making it ready for service in accordance with operating instructions and procedures; clear, tag, test and safety tape these operations.
  • Perform routine water chemistry analysis and operate Continuous Emissions Monitoring System (CEMS) equipment.
  • Maintain logs as assigned.
  • Report any abnormal or irregular conditions that develop during the progress of the work and take corrective measures within the scope of operating instructions.
  • Assist maintenance personnel during maintenance periods.
  • Operate heavy equipment to maintain fuel supply to the station in the event of a casualty to the automated dual feed system.
  • Complete other tasks as assigned by the Control Room Operator, Shift Supervisor, or the Operations Manager.

Working Relationships

The Auxiliary Operator reports to the Operations Manager.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing, and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g. hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.

Fitness for Duty

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post employment random drug screening.

Work Schedule

Position requires 12-hour rotating shifts. Position also requires extended working hours and varied shifts with weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload, and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required.

Compensation

Initial starting compensation range for this opportunity will range from $28.00 to $38.00 per hour.

Job Qualifications

  • Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired in four years of high school.
  • Experience in power plant operations is highly desired.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in water chemistry control, analysis of water conditions, water treatment facility operations, and chemical handling requirements.
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of steam turbine operations, closed system steam generation, industrial safety, hazardous waste management, and inspection/recording of plant parameters.
  • Experience with piping and instrument schematics and process controls.
  • Working knowledge of the power plant industry.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license at all times
