Safety Specialist

Purpose and Scope

The Safety Specialist works closely with the Director of Safety and Director of Field Operations, to ensure the Company beliefs / values / mission / vision are used to promote a safe culture throughout the organization.


Duties and Responsibilities include the following.

Other duties may be assigned.

Maintain positive relationships with outside agencies, such as OSHA, AGC, WSC, ASSP, WisDOT insurance companies, etc., to ensure information exchange and mutual assistance

Implement and enforce safety practices to improve the Company s safety record, including maintaining and leading a comprehensive safety training program for all employees

Remain current on all changes and laws (local, state and federal) affecting our Company s industry, and update and maintain safety programs and policies accordingly to ensure compliance of applicable programs and policies

Conduct regular safety visits to job sites and assess sites for safety compliance

Assist job sites with ensuring they have the safety supplies they need for the tasks required; distribute PPE to the field as necessary

Provide reports and updates to the Director of Safety regarding any safety issues, new programs, new policies, or regulation changes

Provide effective oversight of subcontractor safety and site-specific compliance

Work with project teams to complete thorough JSA s for each definable feature of work during the project planning phase

Participate in pre-installation meetings ahead of critical work activities, both internal and external

Respond to any OSHA job site visits, and manage in coordination with the Director of Safety

Respond to any crisis situation as noted in Vogel Bros. Crisis Management Plan, assist in managing the situation in coordination with the Crisis Management Team

Follow up on any incident or near miss report

Assist in the claims management process, including but not limited to: filing of appropriate paperwork; maintaining Company incident and claim records

Maintain a comprehensive return to work program for worker s compensation claims

Propose and develop Company-wide safety initiatives.

Develop and implement opportunities to build positive employee relations across the organization

Utilize leading and lagging safety indicators and other key performance indicators to identify trends and modify and improve the Company s safety practices

Assist with the development and maintenance of departmental goals to adhere to the Company s corporate business plan

Maintain and administer Company policies and procedures fairly and consistently

Maintain good communication and positive relationships with employees to promote employee satisfaction and ensure a positive working environment

Lead and facilitate regular Safety Team Meetings

Participate in regular Safety meetings with necessary leadership to update team on activities in area of responsibility and determine needs/issues to be addressed

Provide general Safety administrative support, including but not limited to: preparing correspondence, forms and reports; arranging meetings; processing confidential reports and documents; filing; and tracking deadlines


JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

Bachelor s degree in Occupational Safety or related field, or equivalent work experience required

Experience in the construction industry strongly preferred


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of Safety policies/procedures and knowledge of local, state and federal laws and regulations affecting Safety practices

Moderate to advanced computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite required

Must possess a valid driver s license

Maintain current certification in First Aid / CPR / AED

Ability to work in a fast-paced environment

Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters tactfully and professionally

Ability to design and deliver effective training programs

Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously

Outstanding analytical skills with the ability to analyze data/key metrics and make proposals to improve organizational efficiency and growth

Ability to work well under pressure and in stressful, difficult situations

Ability to work independently and also collaboratively with staff at all levels to achieve Company goals

Strong attention to detail

Ability to handle questions and resolve issues in a timely manner


Physical Requirements

Ability to lift 25 pounds without assistance

Ability to talk clearly in English


Work Environment

Office: Indoor, temperature-controlled environment

Job Sites: Exposure to heat, cold, rain, and other outdoor weather conditions; Moderate to loud noise levels; High, precarious locations; Walking surfaces may be uneven and affected by weather and construction conditions.
