Join the Greater Austin YMCA as a Lifeguard! Ensure the safety of members and guests in and around the pool by enforcing rules, monitoring activities, and responding to emergencies. Being a Lifeguard is more than just a job; it's a chance to grow, connect with an incredible team, and serve our community.We're looking for candidates available for early mornings and weekdays, able to work between 10 - 28 hours per week. Swim Instructors receive a complimentary YMCA membership and monthly in-service sessions to enhance skills and build teamwork.

How You Will Make an Impact (Essential Functions)

  • Protect the health, safety, and welfare of all persons in the pool area.
  • Follow personal attire requirements including wearing a team member t-shirt, appropriate swim attire (for women, this consists of one-piece suits), a whistle, a fanny pack with a rescue mask, and rescue tube while on duty.
  • Know, understand, follow, and enforce all rules and policies of the YMCA equally.
  • Know and follow the YMCA Guidelines, Code of Ethics, payroll procedures (including completing timesheets), and established emergency procedures.
  • Know and facilitate pool schedule (i.e., put in or remove lane markers).
  • Render first aid as needed and complete incident/accident report form for every injury/altercation on the premises.
  • Complete basic pool maintenance duties including, but not limited to taking and recording water tests at regular intervals, and adjusting chemicals.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the area; remove items that need attention and report all needed repairs to your supervisor.
  • Greet all members and participants and record attendance.
  • Arrive on deck at least 5 minutes before guarding assignment and complete your designated shift until your substitute arrives.
  • Never leave the pool area while guarding unless another certified guard can watch the pool. If another guard is not available, you must remove the swimmers from the pool.
  • Secure a substitute lifeguard if you cannot make a scheduled shift.
  • If your shift ends when the pool is closing, clear the pool of all swimmers, turn off the lights, and post the "pool closed" sign(s).
  • Attend all required meetings and/or trainings.
  • Support Center and Association goals and directions through effective completion of tasks and verbal display to peers, staff, members, and guests.
  • Know and follow YMCA Aquatic Program levels, objectives, and best practices.
  • Lead the Y's mission, vision and values with program participants, members, staff, and guest by example.
  • Become an Ambassador of the Y's work and culture by being the ultimate storyteller of who we are as an organization and brand.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.


What You Bring to the Community Enterprise

  • Minimum age requirement: 16 years old.
  • Lifeguard certification from YMCA or Red Cross required, including CPR/AED, First Aid, and Oxygen administration. Don't worry if you don't have it - we offer certification services for free for future new employees.
  • Excellent swimming skills to perform rescue techniques and maintain endurance.
  • Ability to remain calm and composed in high-pressure situations.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, bend, talk, and occasionally lift and/or move items including equipment and children. Must be able to remain alert, sit or stand for extended periods, hear noises and distinguish distress signals, scan all areas of the pool with clear vision, perform all physical tasks related to instructing and observing participants in proper stroke techniques, communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations.
