Position Summary: Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Director, this position performs skilled and semi-skilled building and grounds maintenance and construction work. Work involves tasks in carpentry, general maintenance, electrical, plumbing, masonery, HVAC, machinery, and grounds. Work may also involve some general custodial duties.

Essential Function Statement(s)

  • Ability to safely operate hand tools; both manual and power tools.
  • Assist with construction, alterations, and remodel projects as assigned.
  • Clean, grease, and make minor repairs to machinery and other equipment.
  • Perform carpentry, flooring, electrical, or plumbing maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Replaces electrical outlets, light bulbs, and fixtures.
  • Change air filters and maintain circulating pumps and fan coils for HVAC units.
  • Maintain buildings and grounds for safety and appearance.
  • Keep all pathways clear of debris, snow, and ice.
  • Maintain the corridors and steps of all buildings to ensure the safety of patrons.
  • Check on heating, ventilating, and air condition units for proper operation and efficiency.
  • Maintain and repair outdoor sprinkler systems.
  • Effectively communicate and work cooperatively with all County Departments and the General Public.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
  • Perform custodial tasks as required.
  • Other related duties as necessary or required.
SKILLS & ABILITIES

Experience: One year of experience in plumbing, heating, electrical, carpentry or a related position. Education may be substituted for experience.

Education: High School diploma or equivalent. Certificate or degree preferred.

Skills: Ability to accurately read a tape measure and level. Ability to read and follow directions in written and verbal delivery. Safely operate power tools, boom lifts, and other general maintenance equipment.

Problem Solving: Problem-solving exists involving the determination of the best approach to safely performing assigned tasks.

Decision Making: Assignments are made by the supervisor. Decision-making may involve the best method of completing assigned tasks.

Accountability: The employee is not responsible for budgetary control of the department and does not participate in the annual budget process.

Supervision: The employee is expected to work independently on assigned tasks. Work is reviewed by the supervisor Employee has no supervisory responsibility for subordinate personnel.

Personal Relations: Frequent contact with other county departments, and the general public requiring the ability to verbally communicate and relate in a positive and effective manner.

Working Conditions: Job duties involves physical effort. Extreme weather conditions are a factor in this position. Climbing ladders and working in confined spaces and at heights over 10 feet are expected.
