Position Description

Position Title: School Custodian

Location: Lafayette County School District

Report to: Building Principal

Terms of Employment: The salary and length of employment shall be established by the Superintendent of Education.

Job Goal: To provide students with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient place in which to learn, play, and develop.

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Keeps building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas neat and clean at all times.
  • Shovel and sand sidewalks, driveways, parking areas, and steps as appropriate.
  • Checks daily to ensure that all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during the hours of building occupancy.
  • Clears corridors during the day when their condition requires it.
  • Clean restrooms as directed by the building-level principal.
  • Disinfects drinking fountains daily.
  • Washes all windows on both the inside and outside at least twice each year and more frequently if necessary.
  • Keeps the grounds free from rubbish.
  • Keeps all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good slate of preservation.
  • Reports major repairs needed promptly to the principal.
  • Reports immediately to the principal any damage to school property.
  • Remains on the school premises during school hours, and during non-school hours when the use of the building has been authorized and extended work hours have been approved.
  • Upon the direction of the principal, assumes responsibility for the opening and/or closing of the building each school day and for determining, before leaving (if appropriate) that all doors and windows are secured, and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off.
  • Keeps an inventory of supplies, equipment, and fuel on hand, and requisitions such needed replacements from the principal far enough in advance so that they may be delivered in such time as will not hinder the custodian's work.
  • Conducts an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep, and repair.
  • Moves furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the principal.
  • Complies with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste.

General:
  • Notifies the building level principal of conditions that adversely affect the performance of the district.
  • Refrains from discussing confidential and official business with unauthorized people.
  • Conducts all professional business through proper channels of communication; thereby, proving always by his/her behavior that his/her conduct is motivated by a professional spirit.
  • Conduct, personal appearance, etc., are to be professional and appropriate at all times.
  • Observes district policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the principal.
  • High School diploma or G.E.D.
  • Ability to perform the essential job functions
  • Effective interpersonal skills
  • Ability to lift 55 pounds to shoulder height occasionally
  • Ability to push/pull a minimum of 20 pounds frequently

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  1. Maintain a professional relationship with students, faculty, administration and community patrons.
  2. Submit all data and information as requested.
  3. Regularly monitor district email for pertinent communication.
  4. Attend meetings as scheduled by supervisors and District Administrators.
  5. Complete the requested paperwork.
