Position Title: Animal Care / Patrol (Full-Time)

Department(s): Animal Shelter

Reports to (Title): Superintendent

PRIMARY JOB FUNCTIONS:

Incumbent serves as Truck Driver of the Animal Shelter, with responsibility for safe and humane capture of the animals and transports them to the Animal Shelter. Incumbent also provides animal care and cleaning of shelter when directed.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

* Responds to dispatchers calls regarding stray or wild animals, captures the animal, and transports back to the Animal Shelter.

* Removes injured and deceased animals from the City, and transports animals to shelter for proper care or disposal.

* Assists Superintendent in investigations of animal related complaints from residents within jurisdiction as dictated by State and City ordinances.

* Cleans cages and runs, feeds and waters animal on an as needed basis.

* Assists investigation officer with court and nuisance wild animal control.

* Assist in animal health procedures established by the Shelter Adoption Program.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

* Appears as witness in court as needed.

* Assist in humane euthanasia of certain animals.

Incumbent performs duties out of doors and is required to respond to citizens complaints regardless of weather conditions. Incumbent is frequently exposed to hazards associated with the capture of unfriendly and/or diseased animals.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

According to federal guidelines, no one who has any record of a drug related offense may be employed in this position due to the constant handling of controlled substances.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

* Ability to capture and properly handle a variety of animals of different temperaments and in various conditions of health. (M)

* Possess ability to lift and carry large dogs and other animals up to 70 pounds in the performance of animal capture care, and handling. Physical effort is frequently exerted for sustained periods of time. (P)

* Communicate orally and in writing, with members of the public and present a good public appearance. (M,P)

* Possess a valid driver's license. (M,P)

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Incumbent must possess the working knowledge of applicable animal control ordinances, and ability to capture and properly handle a variety of animals of different temperaments, and in various conditions of health.
