Position Summary

Set up and operate taping machines to insulate aluminum and copper wire based upon order specifications for insulation type, width, and thickness, number of layers, insulated thickness and width, insulation build, and footage.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

Taping machine set up

Work from order specifications to perform set up operations involving the use of standard hand tools. Select proper insulation for job, string wire through machine, and set tape overlap and registration. Make all required adjustments to achieve an acceptable product and bring a sample to the Quality Assurance Lab for inspection and verification.

Taping machine operation

Run required product lengths to fill order while maintaining desired product characteristics. Monitor overlap and registration to ensure an acceptable product. Adjust head RPM and/or tractor speed as needed. Monitor and adjust take up to ensure acceptable traverse winding of product. Remove completed product from mill and identify. Record production data on production worksheets and travelers. Keep work areas clean and free of hazards.

Product inspection

Measure insulated product thickness and width for every finished package. Record measurements on the traveler with initials.

Position Specifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Reading and comprehension skills; ability to follow verbal and written instructions; ability to read and interpret process sheets and other production documents
  • Ability to adjust to changes in equipment/tools and modifications to existing equipment for the purposes of continuous improvement
  • Ability to operate powered production equipment
  • Ability to operate the scale computer
  • Ability to follow safe work practices in a manufacturing environment

  • Physical Demands:
    1. Frequently uses hoist to push/pull reels weighing up to 3,200lbs
    2. Frequent standing, walking and bending
    3. Frequent use of arms below shoulder height; minimal use of arms above shoulder height
    4. Frequent reading and interpreting test data and visually inspecting wire
    5. Frequent lifting up to 25lbs
  • Work Environment: Work performed in a plant manufacturing environment. Slippery floors due to steel plates. Incumbent will occasionally be exposed to Cold Temperatures <65 degrees and Heat >80 degrees. The environment is well lit; the noise level is often minimal but incumbent may be exposed to higher than 85 decibels
